Do you every burn the tang instead of drilling it? It would probably be easier and would get you a much tighter fit.
Even when you burn in the tang, you still drill a pilot hole that is a few sizes smaller than the tang. I have done it in the past, and it is a pita; takes forever. Plus, this epoxy is stronger than the wood and provides an excellent grip.
 
WW1 Bolo knife, manufactured by Plumb tools in 1918, bought on Craigslist for $60 in nasty shape. Sandblasted all metal components, cerakoted them, sanded stained and laquered the wood. Love it!

Here is a beauty I just picked up.

The body of the knife is all titanium, the firing button is brass and the blade is M390. It is 9" long and the fit and finish is outstanding.
