I don't get it. I purchased Remington 2 3/4 inch 16 Ga bird shot rather nievely expecting them to be 2 3/4 inch. Looking at the shell it has 2 3/4 running vertically but horizonally it reads 2 1/2 inch along with the shot size and # of pellets. So I measured it and it's more like 2 3/8 inch. Why the inconsitancy in measurements?

Thanks up front for some clue.

The gun is chambered for 2 3/4" which is about what the shell will expand to when fired. This unfired 28 ga is 2 3/8" and the fired one is 2 11/16".
