"A 61-year-old man was shot and arrested after allegedly exchanging gunfire with authorities near the Telus World of Science, police said."

"Police said the exchange is directly linked to a shooting a few kilometers away in the downtown core minutes before, during which shots were fired outside a Starbucks."

Wait, what, violence in Canada?! Must be the bad influence of the USA.

I work in Vancouver, BC and that location isn't too far from where all the drug addicts congregate. That said, it is very hard to get a license to own a firearm in Canada (they even ask you the name of not only your wife/girlfriend but any other person you might be banging and any one of them can prevent you from getting a license). Most of the shootings up there are gang related as is most of the victims.
