UPDATE: Kennewick shooting believed to be gang-related retaliation
By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer

A gang-related retaliation is suspected of being the cause of this afternoon’s shooting in Kennewick, authorities said.

The altered .22-caliber rifle used in the shooting was recovered behind a business at Clearwater and Williams Street, said Kennewick police Sgt. Ken Lattin.

The victim, Miguel A. Montenegro, 20, of Kennewick, was shot once in the stomach by Jose Cardona, 20, of Pasco, Lattin said.

Montenegro and Cardona are known rival gang members, Lattin said.

Today’s shooting is believed to be related to gang shootings in Pasco on Tuesday and Wednesday, Lattin said.

Montenegro was apparently shot after being confronted by Cardona about 2 p.m. in a gravel area near the Sundance Apartments.

Montenegro ran toward the Hapo Community Credit Union at Fourth Avenue and Union Street and collapsed in the parking lot.

He was in obvious pain but was able to talk to officers before paramedics took him to Kennewick General Hospital.

Lattin said Montengro’s injuries are not life-threatening.

Kennewick police and Benton County sheriff’s deputies quickly surrounded the area after the shooting and spotted Cardona walking behind Winco Foods at Clearwater and Union, Lattin said.

Officers then searched garbage cans and Dumpsters across the street near Domino’s pizza looking for the weapon or clothing that Cardona may have thrown away.

Lattin said investigators believe there are more people involved in today’s shooting and any witnesses are encouraged to contact Kennewick police.

This happened only a 5 minute stroll from my house. It's normally pretty quiet here! When the story first broke, a shotgun was used. Now it's a modified .22 rifle. Will be interesting to learn about the modification.

Gang shooting suspect to face 4 felonies
By Kristin M. Kraemer, Herald staff writer

A gang member reportedly involved in last week's shooting near a Kennewick credit union has been charged with four felony crimes.

Jose Cardona, 21, of Kennewick, will appear in court today to enter a plea to first-degree assault, second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a short-barreled rifle. The assault charge includes a firearm enhancement, which would mean mandatory prison time if he's convicted.

Cardona is accused of shooting Miguel Montenegro in the stomach Dec. 30. Montenegro, said to be a rival gang member, required surgery.

Cardona claims he was confronted near HAPO Community Credit Union by Montenegro and another man, and hid from them in a nearby alley, court documents said. He told Kennewick detectives that when he saw the two men walk toward him, he "shot several times into the ground," documents said.

Prosecutors requested $200,000 bail for Cardona when they filed the charges Wednesday.
