UPDATE: Kennewick shooting believed to be gang-related retaliation
By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer
A gang-related retaliation is suspected of being the cause of this afternoons shooting in Kennewick, authorities said.
The altered .22-caliber rifle used in the shooting was recovered behind a business at Clearwater and Williams Street, said Kennewick police Sgt. Ken Lattin.
The victim, Miguel A. Montenegro, 20, of Kennewick, was shot once in the stomach by Jose Cardona, 20, of Pasco, Lattin said.
Montenegro and Cardona are known rival gang members, Lattin said.
Todays shooting is believed to be related to gang shootings in Pasco on Tuesday and Wednesday, Lattin said.
Montenegro was apparently shot after being confronted by Cardona about 2 p.m. in a gravel area near the Sundance Apartments.
Montenegro ran toward the Hapo Community Credit Union at Fourth Avenue and Union Street and collapsed in the parking lot.
He was in obvious pain but was able to talk to officers before paramedics took him to Kennewick General Hospital.
Lattin said Montengros injuries are not life-threatening.
Kennewick police and Benton County sheriffs deputies quickly surrounded the area after the shooting and spotted Cardona walking behind Winco Foods at Clearwater and Union, Lattin said.
Officers then searched garbage cans and Dumpsters across the street near Dominos pizza looking for the weapon or clothing that Cardona may have thrown away.
Lattin said investigators believe there are more people involved in todays shooting and any witnesses are encouraged to contact Kennewick police.
