The Media guide to guns:

Journalists Guide to Firearms Identification.jpg

Burt, odds are good we'll find out he was on SSRI's for depression or whatnot.

One article I read speculates that the shooter stole an AR from an incapacitated guard once he was inside the building. So...how would more legislation have prevented this?
If this IS the case it will be interesting to see how they can rationalize 'gun control' from it.

I don't understand is where was the security at the facility? With the shipyard and the Command office there should have been various levels of security from unarmed/armed private security, to Navy LE/security, to even the occasional Fed. You would think that someone would have engaged him early on.

It's sad and unfortunate, but crazy people will continue to be crazy irrespective of religion, race, location of work and gun laws. The moment someone loses his moral compass that tells him what's right and what's wrong and the value of life it's over, no matter what the laws or circumstances.

Right. And as we see the crazy people will go crazy on a bus, a plane, a theater, a court room, a military base etc... you name it. We Americans have a Constitution that states that We have a right to protect ourselves with Our own firearms. It is a shame that We have let Our government employes take that right so far away from us.

Well, if he was a smart bad guy he would take out the LEOS/Guards at the door then he is free to slaughter at will. That is probably what he did.

That very well could be.
Facilities like that usually have access/egress control points which theoretically are designed to slow a shooter down. I can see a shooter getting past a first control point, but they should have been all over him by the second, unless he waited until he was through them to go on the rampage.
I'm not going start wearing the tin foil and yelling false flag yet, but there is something very fishy about this one. This wasn't a school, or a shopping center that has a bare minimum of security, but a fairly high security facility due to the classified nature of the work. Here is a description of where the shooting took place courtesy of CBS news

The rampage took place at Building 197, the headquarters for Naval Sea Systems Command, which buys, builds and maintains ships, submarines and combat systems. About 3,000 people work at headquarters, many of them civilians.

The Washington Navy Yard is a sprawling labyrinth of buildings and streets protected by armed guards and metal detectors, and employees have to show their IDs at doors and gates to come and go.

As I said I'm highly suspicious of this one

Looks like the shooter was a known hothead, who used guns recklessly.

Mr. Alexis had been detached from the Navy in January 2011 after an earlier gun arrest in Ft. Worth, Texas. Mr. Alexis had joined the Navy in May 2007, according to Navy records.

A defense official said that Mr. Alexis was pushed out of the military because of repeated incidents and arrests.

"There is no question there was a pattern of misconduct while in the Navy reserves," the official said.

According to a Fort Worth Police Department incident report, Aaron Alexis was arrested in September 2010 for discharging a firearm in Fort Worth. (Read the full report.)

An officer was called to the apartment of a woman, who had a bullet hole in her floor and ceiling. She claimed that she suspected it came from Mr. Alexis, her downstairs neighbor, who had confronted her days earlier, complaining that she was making too much noise, according to the report.

Mr. Alexis told police he had fired the gun accidentally when he was cleaning it. No one was injured and no charges were filed, according to the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney's Office, which prosecutes crimes in the Fort Worth area.

In a separate incident, Seattle police said Mr. Alexis had been arrested in 2004 for shooting out the tires of another man's vehicle in an anger-fueled "blackout." Mr. Alexis told police at the time he had been deeply disturrbed by events he witnessed during the attack of Sept. 11, 2001. Police said Mr. Alexis's father said his son had been involved in 9/11 rescue efforts and had post-traumatic stress and anger-management issues.

The latest word is that the man took out a guard with his shotgun, and seized the guard's pistol, then later took out another guard and took his AR.

He also had a security clearance necessary to work a contractor on-base.

If this is the new push for an AWB, or UBCs, it will be the absolute height of media/governmental dishonesty.

13 Dead in Shooting at D.C. Navy Yard, Including Gunman | NBC4 Washington

Survellance video shows the gunman entered the NAVSEA building, at 1336 Isaac Hull Ave., with a shotgun, News4's Jackie Bensen reported.

He shot a security officer in the head, killing him, and took his 9 mm pistol and a magazine of ammunition. The shooter then continued through the building, and seemed to target his victims, who were mostly on the third and fourth floors.

According to what witnesses are telling investigators, by the time the shootings ended, the gunman was seen with a semiautomatic 9 mm pistol and an AR-15 assault rifle. Authorities are investigating whether the gunman took the D.C. police officers' rifle.

actually this is much worse for the argument on the anti-gunners side. DC is a gun free zone, kinda hard to say banning guns will do anything to prevent crimes like this when is happens there.
