I thought it might be nice to have a thread where we can share information and resources on being and getting prepared, for anything.

    Tips
    How-To's
    Links
    Websites
    Books
    Videos
    Downloads
    Skills
    Supplies
    Useful Products
    Good Deals
    Reviews
    Recipes
    Local Finds
    Ideas
    Advice
    Etc.

Anything you'd like to share to help the preparedness-minded community. The more people who are, the better off we'll be as a society. :)
Just keep it polite. No debates or bashing please.

I'll go first. Libraries in Clackamas County
You might assume they wouldn't have books on that kinda thing, but they do. I've literally found hundreds of useful books on anything you'd ever want to know for any situation. Hunting, farming, outdoor survival, food, shelter, protection, they even have books on guns and other weaponry. And I mean really specific subjects too. They even have a book called, Survival mom : how to prepare your family for everyday disasters and worst-case scenarios by Bedford, Lisa. There are books on subjects that are as broad or as specific as you want to be. Because let's face it, sometimes it's difficult sifting through billions of internet comments and opinions to find specific information. And if your library doesn't have it, you can request it. So yeah, the internet is great, but books will never go out of style imo. Ps. They have video, cds, ebooks, and magazines if reading isn't really your thing.

I just read a book called:

Northwest Foraging: The Classic Guide To Edible Plants Of The Pacific Northwest
    Benoliel, Doug

    9781594853661.jpg

    Excellent book.

This book tells everything from gardening and canning, to making your own windmill or water power, to digging a well, to building a shelter to animal husbandry, to spinning yarn and tanning hides, to cooking to making booze. Very handy book.

I just found that book at the library and can't wait to check it out. My family subscribed to Readers Digest every year for as long as I can remember and they always had really useful tips. Thanks for sharing!

Another great place to find info is iTunes. itunes.png

It's not just for music. You can search in your web browser or directly in the iTunes application and they have a ton of free podcasts, ebooks, and all types of media on the subject (or anything for that matter). There are even phone apps for planning your pantry or calculating gun loads and ballistics. But I like to use it for 1. streaming internet radio, and 2. podcasts. There are a bunch of podcasts and hours of information on preparedness, guns, farming, hunting, medicine, etc. And there are hundreds of independent radio stations online that you can stream through iTunes. You just have to search for them in iTunes Radio or google and open them up. I like to listen to my podcasts and favorite stations in the background while I do other things around the house. And of course if you have an ipod (which I don't) you can take them with you. it's easy to work, iTunes is free to download, podcast subscriptions are free, and you can rewind if you like or miss something that was said in the shows. Besides books, and the internet, this is probably my favorite resource. There's also a news/talk radio section in the Radio feature which is full of news stations from all over the country and world. It's a great way to stay up on current events. There's just so much real time information and it's very thorough. The problem isn't finding information, it's having enough time in your life to take it all in haha.

And IMO this is a good way to get family members or friends who don't understand, or are reluctant, on board. Reading about it can be overwhelming and sometimes just hearing it explained from someone else helps. Most of these podcasts are well organized and the hosts generally break prepping down into the basics by topic and relevance, and some actually have a "Getting your spouse on board" episode. The Prepping 101 podcast has a good one.

Actually, readers digest books give you a lot of bang for your buck. There are usually three books under one cover so that saves space. These are best seller list novels that have been condensed. Readers Digest does a very good job with them! Also, thrift shops are usually full of them at a very attractive price.
