WASHINGTON — A Republican senator told constituents Thursday that President Obama is "perilously close" to meeting the constitutional standard for impeachment.

Speaking at a town hall-style meeting in Muskogee, Okla., Sen. Tom Coburn repeatedly called the Obama administration lawless and incompetent.

"I think those are serious things, but we're in serious times," Coburn said in response to a question about impeachment. "And I don't have the legal background to know if that rises to 'high crimes and misdemeanors,' but I think you're getting perilously close."

Coburn called Obama a "personal friend" from Obama's time in the Senate, but said that personal relationships should have no bearing on the question of impeachment.

The comments, first reported by the Tulsa World, were part of a talk in which Coburn said that "the constitutional republic that we have is at risk" and called for a constitutional convention to cut down the size of government.
