(No surprise that their definition of "common sense" doesn't end with Initiative 1491.)

Voters give sensible nod to gun safety; Legislature must pick up the mantle

The Washington Legislature should be inspired by voters and pass common-sense gun laws.

WASHINGTON state has taken another common-sense step toward gun safety. The ballot initiative that will create a court procedure to keep guns away from people who are a threat to themselves or others passed on Tuesday.

Initiative 1491 will fill in some gaps in existing state laws that already take guns away from people in certain circumstances, such as those that are part of civil-protection orders in domestic-violence situations. But existing laws set too high a bar for immediate action when people are trying to save someone who is suicidal or stop someone who has made violent threats against friends or family members.

Initiative 1491 sets up a court procedure for a judge to issue extreme-risk protection orders to temporarily prevent someone from accessing firearms if there is demonstrated evidence the person is in danger or has made a credible threat against another person.

It's a sensible change to the law supported by people across the political spectrum. And it's an idea the Legislature should have enacted earlier this year. Were lawmakers running for re-election afraid a majority of voters would think gun ownership is more important than gun safety and suicide prevention?

It's time for lawmakers to stop leaving bold ideas strictly in the hands of voters. The initiative process is imperfect, and every law passed this way is flawed. Bills that make it through the give-and-take of the legislative process are almost always improved.

Next up in the arena of common-sense gun safety: a proposed ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines. These weapons are not needed by hunters nor people protecting their families from home invaders.

Washington state could continue to set the tone in this debate by continuing to pass common-sense legislation like the extreme-risk protection order, universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons.

Soooo....people cannot kill themselves without a gun. And people who have made threats against x will be barred from firearms (like a restraining order already does...). Liberal logic at work again. One small step for man, one giant leap to retardation for liberals.

Can't wait until they take it all away and enslave us with an 80% tax rate to pay for their beloved illegals and other "Harvard" bound friends.

My god. I live in the only country in the world where people kill themselves and hurt others. Based on the rhetoric it must be true. Canada, England, France and all the other places with zero murders, suicides and robberies must look at us as animals with our guns.

Oh but you don't have to accually make a threat, all they( police, family, friends,or ex's ) have to do
Is say you're a threat to yourself or someone else and that's it! No evidence needed. Then you have to prove yourself innocent. (it states in the text the burden is on you to prove yourself innocent) You should read it!! Its quite frightening!!!

They can do that with just about anything. In some states all it takes for you to be convicted of rape is a complaint against you. That's all it took to send Steven Avery to prison the first time. No witnesses, no evidence, just her word against yours and you can spend the rest of your life being gang raped in prison for a crime you didn't commit. Funny how he ended up being exonerated, the system works...sort of. And no, I'm not a "How to Make a Murderer" fan, refuse to watch it because it's biased and he and his little bubblegum nephew are both guilty.

One downside to the Trump election: a revolution is not happening any time soon. Well maybe it will when the economy crashes.

It seems far too many people still believe in the government religion. But some laws just cry out to be broken, no matter what the majority thinks.

Revolution, lol. There have been a hand full of people who went out shouting revolution. They are either dead or in prison. Yes, I get that some people die in revolutions, but there will not be one, a real one. Most people are cowardly now, it's how we are programmed to live in society. And most won't give up their beloved Starbucks and Comcast or McDonald's to risk going to prison or getting killed by yourself. Look at how many of the people at the Oregon standoff dropped their guns and ran for their lives when the FBI started arresting and shooting at people.
