Scope Choice for 20” AR

I haven't gotten any good offers on my Colt AR15a4, so I'm thinking about putting a scope on it, but can't decide which one.

Rifle is a 20" with FSB and flat top receiver. I'd really like to stick with Leupold. Main uses will be for fun shooting and an occasional (maybe twice a year) coyote hunt. I'd like to stay under $500, hopefully with mount and 30mm is a plus.

The Leupold Mark AR scopes are decent from my experience. You'll have to live with a 1 inch tube, but I've never understood why everyone needs a 30mm tube these days.

The 30mm isn't mandatory, but I honestly think they look better, and gather a little more light.

Your eye can only accept so much light. The front objective divided by the magnification gives you exit pupil. Anything more than 4mm is more than your eye can use. So, at 12x, a 4-12x40 (actually 42mm), gives you 3.5mm which is barely under what the human eye can actually use.

Yep 34mm is the way to go.

It is not as easy to sell an AR style rifle these days as it once was. Too much bad press.

Leupold has a couple of scopes that are mid range variable and have the ability to put a red or green dot in the center of the cross hairs. I don't know how much they cost, but I think they are called 'patrol rifle' scopes designed to work especially with AR style rifles.

30mm tube will give you more travel adjustment over a 1" tube.

If you're not shooting 700+ yards and your mount is somewhere near square, it won't matter. Besides, you'd be surprised how many 30mm tubes have 1 inch sized erectors.

Thats a great scope. I use them on a few bolt action rifles and also one of my 20" tubed ar's. They work great for the money.
