Hi there,
I'm new to the Salem area from Alaska and was wondering if I might get some tips on where are decent/close by public hunting areas. Thanks in advance.
BLM, USFS and Oregon Department of Forestry have very large land holdings just east of Salem and also in the Coast Range. Do a search on their web sites and you'll get a good idea of where things are. I believe you can get maps and hunting info at the ODFW office in Salem also. BLM has an office on the south end of Salem on Fabry just off of Commercial (across teh street from Safeway) and you can pick up good maps there also. An item everyone has have to have is the Oregon Gazetteer, which will have almost all of the back country roads on it.
The ODFW web site has a ton of good info and belonging to the Oregon Hunters Association is a worthwhile thing.
