We just got back today from our yearly father-son rat hunt. My 11 year old is an amazing shot, and doesn't know it. We have 18 varmint rifles, and collect more every year. 22, 22mag, 17hmr, 223, and 17 Remington are staples with 222, 22-250, 220 Swift and 218 Bee seeing a lot of use.

284guy - Good hunting! Looks like you have the gutting thing down pat, BUT can you also skin them with one shot? Love it!

My 17 Remington turned a few inside out. It's not as pelt friendly on rats. Might have to drop down to 14 caliber next year. Ha ha

They might be good for a smoker or a Spaniel.

Hunt went well, but the weather was rough. We were in the K-Falls area and it rained pretty much the whole time. The wind really seemed to keep them in the holes. I was the only one with a melee kill though =). A member here loaned me a 6.5-20X that worked great. anything inside 150 was fair game with the AR and mil surplus ammo i figure that isn't bad.
