I believe I was the first owner of this gem. Cylinder is stainless steel with melonite finish. It has a blast shield on the top strap like its .357 big brothers, and a shrouded barrel as well. Very sturdy gun, especially in .38 +p
This is an off catalog item for S&W. initially they were made for a foreign contract (Japanese police it's the rumor). S&W makes batches of these on occasion. They usually dry up quickly.
You might have noticed the SN on the sideplate, below the latch. That is because the bottom of the grip, where the SN usually is on J frames in addition to the crane area, has a hole for a lanyard attachment, which was a requirement for the foreign contract.

Very nice carry gun, and a much more interesting choice than a plain j frame.
