I noticed that I have rust forming on one of my firearms. a Ruger Mark 3 bull barrel (rust is on the end of the barrel) - how do I approach removing it?

never had rust occur like this before. thanks.

If it is simple surface rust just wipe it off, re-oil and then consider how you are storing it to reduce humidity.

If it does not simply wipe off use 0000 steel wool (the finest type that does not scratch finish) and then re-oil.

If it is worse than that with pitting (rust eating holes into the metal) then a little more has to be done.

Brass/copper wire brush and oil or hoppes.

If deeper, steel wool and oil or hoppes.

If deeper, a gunsmith.

Before and after.
Took 5 minutes. And dose not remove any blueing.

My own prosses.

The system I have used for many years is to use a non-steel wool. The stuff that is recommended for use on Teflon. That and a good quality oil, such as Corrosion-X.

Steel Wool of any grade can leave very fine bits of the metal which can cause more rusting.

+1 for 0000 steel wool and your favorite gun oil. I've used it on a number of guns with light surface rust and it works well. Once it's off, if you can, keep your guns stored in a place with low humidity, such as a safe with a dehumidifier/desiccant or something like a Golden Rod. Proper storage (and cleaning after shooting), should help preventing it from coming back.

lots of good advice here thanks. all guns in safe, with the chemical moisture remover (Damprid), but it sounds like i need to step it up.

Damprid is just Calcium Chloride (salt) and you're introducing salt water into your safe.
I would buy some rechargeable EvaDry units and also add a Goldenrod.

Another vote for those evadry's, i have two in my safe - also, agree on jbett's salt comment, get that crap out the safe, not a good idea.

To remove light surface rust I like to use the finest 0000 steel wool and your fav gun oil/lube. For rust prevention there is a test that they did with salt water on steel treated with several dozen different types of rust preventives. Overall the winners were OneShot by hornady and WD-40 Rust Specialist. This isnt your normal wd-10, its not a lube but does prevent rust very very well. The oneshot is more versatile as it can be used as a lube and rust protection but is quite costly.
