Had a chat at a local gun counter today and one of my favorite stores, and......the older gent at the counter said he heard from a local police officer that there were spent pistol rounds found at the clackamas mall in the food court. So the rumor mill has it that someone did shoot the mall shooter and then decided to get out of their quickly.

The story is all third hand of course, but maybe, who knows. We may never know for sure or maybe following the investigation and an autopsy we will know for sure who ended the spree. The shooter or a mystery hero.

I suppose there will be all kinds of stories that will come out of this event before it is put to bed.

But the guy at the gun counter and myself are both hoping that its the truth.:s0155:

Hummmm. food for thought. Out of 10,000 people how many there where CHL do you think?

I can tell you that I never enter that place without my pocket pistol, and nobody would ever know unless I have the big one on the floor and the EMT's scream gun!!!

There would be many permit holders in the mall at any one time but few that would have the backbone to go up against a AR platform. Unless they were standing beside or behind the guy when he activated his AR and they had a very safe shot.

I am sure I would give myself away with the little pool of water down my pant-leg.

I am sure there would be many little puddles around, including mine were I there.

I have also wondered how many people in there were carrying and what is going to happen to them now since they searched every person who came out of the mall and as I understand the mall is posted no firearms ! To me, my weapon is a last resort to the life and limb of myself, my family and anyone who is in close proximity to me, I would not actively search out and engage anyone if I did not have to...

During the press conference yesterday morning at 10:00, the Sheriff eluded to possible handgun casings at the scene as well and then clarified there were no other weapons recovered. I looked at all the articles after and not one reporter mentioned... I guess that does not surprise me. I can imagine if a CC'r did shoot the idiot we will not here to much praise. I can't imagine seeking him out either, but when the stolen rifle jammed, that would had been an opportune time if one was close by.

Kudos to longcolt and Sgt nambu for being honest and not talking a bunch of armchair Rambo smack. I don't doubt that I would be anything less than scared out of my bladder at that same moment. Training and experience are things that I would presume most of us lack.
Here's to keeping a level head.

Cc holder empty casing or maybe a second shooter ?? Or false story ?
An AR going off vs a hand gun going off there is quite a difference Especially if you've been around guns but if you haven't and you're Freaking out trying to find a place to go you may not hear the difference. If a cc holder did shoot him I could see the police covering it up Afraid
It may cause more shoot outs or Chaos in cases like this, like who's the shooter and who's the cc holder when they arrive. I'm sure we'll hear all sorts of stories about this shooting as days go by.

It was mentioned elswhere that the man killed (Steve) was a ccw holder in OR... He could have been engaging the killer, but I would think then that a weapon would have been recovered, so who knows...

I would imagine that with the video security system that the mall has, I would bet they have good video of the entire event. As to the pistol casing, could it have been a 9mm AR? Just wondering.

I heard the press conference as well. A reporter asked "since only one gun was found, was there only one type of ammo casing found as well?" The Pio response was to the tune of, we're going to be talking about that later on today with the detectives. It was definitely not a standard yes or no answer

This...

If a person with a concealed weapon did shoot, then what is their risk of coming forward if the mall has posted no-carry signs?

I would think there would have been a report had the deceased cc'er been armed. It would have been an opportunity for the anti's to gloat about cc'ing not being an effective way to defend yourself.

Also, had not heard that all persons were searched when leaving the mall. I'm thinking that would not happen in the heat of things due to the massive numbers of people leaving.

Statistically, 5.1% of adults, or just over 1 of 20, has an active CHL. This is according to the GAO report from June or July. There have been considerably more since then. Even if we account for out of State Oregon CHL holders, the number is still a very real figure.

Assuming only half of the people at CTC were adults, that would shake out to about 250 CHL holders.

The trick is that even a lot of CHL holders live in Condition White, and only carry "when they go somewhere dangerous".

For those who were carrying, and chose to flee, rather than engage... I respect the choice to live. That's sensible. Nobody should reasonably expect you/them to run toward gunfire.

CHLs are about OPTIONS. Getting to safety is a great choice.

As a CHL holder, Law Enforcement and Military Combat-Trained specialist in a moderate array of weaponry (and a stalwart Member of the Single Action Shooting Society: aka Cowboy Action), I (when given the opportunity), will always resort to the ancient art of Run-Fu.
