Ruger Alaskan 454... ??? Help me understand

Ruger Alaskan 454.... Why are they selling for sooo much? My good friend has one and may sell it but I can't tell him why this one is selling for $1450.00 with 14bids on it. His Alaskan is identical to this one, other than being brand new he has only shot 20ish rds through it.

I've wanted one ever since they came out but the cost of the gun and the ammo has prevented me from getting one. If I went into grizzly territory often it would be easier to justify the expense.

Not discontinued according to the Ruger website. I found three shops in my area that have them for around $800 on Gallery of guns.

I used to carry the Alaskan 454 and/or a 12ga Mossberg when I was guiding. My guess on the jacked up pricing lately is:
1) movie influence
2) Fred Meyer recently re-started selling firearms. If store managers are taking their order guides from other stores that never stopped selling guns, you've got a lot of WA and OR Freddies ordering the .454 and tying up available stock.

It's a great gun if you can handle it - be sure to pair it with some decent optics... you never know when you're going to stumble upon an angry moose or mama griz.
