Its my understanding that, over the years, Ruger has been replacing metal parts in its 10/22's with plastic ones. Are the old Rugers any "better" than the newer ones, or are the plastic parts equal in quality to the metal ones they replaced? Is there a particular year or serial # range that is preferable in terms of quality and resale value?

It's all personal choice. the plastic stuff is just as tuff as the aluminum.
You can't polish plastic, other than that (in my opinion) they are equal.

I bought one of the "plastic" 10/22's a couple months ago and ended up swapping in a spare old aluminum trigger housing and a Power custom trigger and volquartsen hammer as polishing the sear and hammer didn't improve the trigger pull like it does with the older all metal 10/22 rifles.

I am NOT an expert, but I have done five trigger jobs on Ruger 10/22s. four were metal housings & one was polymer, all turned out very nice.
I had no problem getting the triggers to perform the way I wanted (metal & polymer)

Like I said before it's all personal preference!!:s0155:
