It would be nice to have RSS feeds for the various forums so users could see topics pop up on their desktop while doing other work.

Lots of different ways of doing it. You can display it in the news feeds on the desktop in Vista, you get it under "latest headlines" in Firefox and there are tons of other readers out there.

I just got them setup. You can click the orange RSS button on the main forum page to get the URL.
