I would definitely bring a pistol at least. Items to note...
  • Any mags over 10 rounds are illegal and a no-no. Gotta leave those at home
  • Transport must be unloaded in a locked container. A soft case that is lockable counts as a locked container. The trunk counts as a locked container as long as there is no passthrough to the trunk from inside the vehicle.
  • You want to keep your gun out of the glovebox and the center console. Those are no bueno
  • You can keep your gun inside the vehicle with you as long as it is in the locked container
  • Mags can be loaded but NOT inserted into the Magwell.
  • Legally, mags can be loaded and in the locked container with the gun, just not in the magwell. Note that this does not mean you'll get a cop that actually knows the law. Some may have issues with this so you may want to keep the mags separate
  • Note that there is no law that says the loaded mags have to be locked up. They can be sitting in the center console of your car, in your pocket, on your belt, etc. Perfectly legal. Obviously you don't want these to be visible if you get stopped.
  • But one could go from the gun unloaded in the locked container with the dial combination only one digit off, to loading the weapon from a mag on your belt, fairly quickly...if one needed to.
  • Up to you whether you want to bring a rifle/shotgun for the hotel room. It's perfectly legal to have a loaded gun in your hotel room, but you obviously don't want to advertise that as you're walking into the place.
  • Almost forgot...make sure you bring all the ammo you will need. As an out of state resident you will have a hell of a time buying it once you get here.
Good luck...and may the odds be ever in your favor!
Yep that is a good summation.

We have family down there. Every time I've driven down there I've carried what I carry here.
Ccw on hip. AR in trunk with armor and go bag.

Never had an issue. I've carried all over the state of California and I've been pulled over many times for speed on that drive down while carrying. Never any issues. Just don't be stupid.

Also, around lake Tahoe lot of people from Nevada side meander into the CA side and they don't leave their guns at home. Also I believe Lake Tahoe is a little more conservative than where I visit when I go to CA (bay area) I couldn't see you having many issues there. I believe that county is still a "may issue" so folks are probably carrying up there.

Best judgment is don't go unless you're going to protect yourself while you're there. Who cares what the law says. If the risk of getting caught is too high for you, then just don't go. But I wouldn't go anywhere unarmed in this day and age.

Thx for the homework.
Can't think of anything witty about Hunger games….. it's on the tip of the finger but as I type it…….. it's just stupid.

See your back and forth San Diego … it's been 11 years since I left Sacramento. I feel it's a foreign place now….. it's all coming back. The 2A hammer is swinging further north every year.

Yeah….. still can't think of anything. Haymitch was good though.

This is very complete and the process I follow when I visit family outside Sacramento. I won't travel unarmed, keep the unloaded pistol in a quick access VAULTEK on the floor between the front seats (hidden from view of course), magazines on person. Can be back in action in just a few seconds.

Magazines of 10 rounds or less and revolvers are ones best friend when one must be in Kalifornia.

Make sure your auto registration is up to date and all your lights are in good working order. I carry a complete set of replacement bulbs and the tools to change them when I road trip. Stupid things can cause an unexpected/unwanted interaction with LEO, don't let the simple things trip you up.

There are NO ranges in Tahoe. Nothing. TRPA has it illegal to shoot inside the basin. I dont CCW without a permit. But you can carry your locked pistol in a case. Semi autos can have the mag loaded but OUT of the gun. Revolvers can NOT be loaded.
Please enjoy coming into Nevada and the Carson Valley. Thousands of places in the desert to shoot. If you want, pm me for locations. Plenty of ammo to be bought in Carson City and Reno.
Nevada has open carry for anyone in the state. Observe all the usual places NOT to open carry as well as Casinos.

I travel as a free man, and don't give a rats arse what californication believes my rights are when I cross a border! That said, I carry a "Standard" capacity 1911 and a long gun, usually one of 3, a K-31, M-98, or Winny 95 and I don't worry about Cali's stupid anti-gun laws, and I certainly don't feel under gunned!

I concur with the comment above about "Obeying Local Laws" and will do so when states like Kommiefornia, Orynogun and Taxington start to obey the findings of the US Supreme Court and the intent of the Second Amendment. I am a citizen of the United States of America to which the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights apply. While I understand the term "abode", my abode includes this physical body in which I live. I'm tired of governments which think they can write or enforce any law which conflicts with the Constitution and Supreme Court findings. I'm tired of our "representatives" who speak with forked tongues; support WOKE efforts; do not support law enforcement or the criminal justice system. I am tired of judges who carry their personal/political views into the courtroom, coddling criminals or offering a no-bail to offenders. I'm tired of prosecutors who do anything but prosecute unless it serves their political ambitions. I'm tired of "dying" the death of 1,000 cuts...taxes, fees and otherwise. Maybe someday the PEOPLE will stop paying taxes, supporting incompetent politicians and we become again a united nation. Born during WWII, I knew that life and never thought I'd see it become the UNTIED States. In the next election, I hope to see serious improvement. All I want is peace, security and the ability to manage my own life. "Government" is a four-letter word!

Great question. My answer would be "take something that goes bang".

Seriously, a few years ago I took the family to Yellowstone. We were traveling through multiple states and since Oregon doesn't have reciprocity with all of them I (foolishly) left my hardware at home. On the way home, stopping for the night in Idaho Falls, we found the place that five months before when we were making reservations through one of those Internet travel sites and was rated 4 1/2 stars, had converted to a short-term stay place. There were sketchy characters all over. A woman (crack queen) breaking into a room through the front window across the way. A likely homeless family moving everything including the toaster in next door. Their older teenage son literally had his nose pressed against the glass in our car window trying to get a good look inside while we watched through our room window. A rough looking character just ambling around the parking lot with a Hi-Point on his hip and TWO huge Bowie knives swinging on his belt. (If you've got a gun, why do you need two 15" knives?) There was no onsite management and we had to call someone to let us into our room when we got there. I called the guy back, told him what was going on around us and that we were gonna bounce. He apologized profusely and later even refunded our money. We made our way to Jerome, Idaho and stopped at a Best Western that cost about twice as much but was the best night's sleep we had the whole trip.

Don't get me wrong. Even if I had some hardware with me, we still would have moved on to Jerome. But I would have felt a whole lot better while we were packing our stuff back out to the car. That will never happen to me again. Lesson learned.
Funny that "Jerome" was the better place to spend the night. A good buddy of mine grew up in Jerome and he has nothing good to say about it. Says volumes if Jerome is better than Idaho Falls. 🤣

I'm old and my memory must suck. My wife just told me it was Twin Falls NOT Idaho Falls. I looked at a map and (as usual) she is right! :p

In all seriousness I road tripped back through there a year ago and left all firearms at home, my last scenario was carry the revolver and lock it away while driving.

Problem, If my rig broke down and I have to leave it, do I...

a. carry illegally
or
b. leave it in the rig and hope it does not get stolen.

I chose to gas up in Palm Springs, stay at the Aunts house in Santa Clarita (gas up there) gas up half way to Redding (stay the night) gas up next to hotel then GTFO.

I gassed up in Pasadena the year before, never felt as unsafe as that place. I will never do that again.

Headed to Utah next week and have a Utah/Oregon permit class this weekend. Skipping Cali.

I go with option A.

It's only a misdemeanor if caught.

I have not read through all the responses but I have traveled in other states with a pistol in a case, mag removed, and unlocked under a towel. If I was ever to be pulled over my hand goes under the towel as I am pulling over and I snap the lock closed and that is that.

Even where that's legal, that doesn't sound like good advice. Police are particularly sensitive to furtive movements when they're pulling people over.
