The Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has died at the age of 80, it has today been announced. The London-born drummer joined the then-fledgling band in 1963 after meeting Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Brian Jones while playing in rhythm and blues clubs. Along with Jagger and Richards, Watts featured on every one of the band's studio albums. He was widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers of all time.

Another piece of my youth gone. R.I.P. Charlie. He wasn't your typical rocker and led a relatively quiet life.

In the '80s, intoxicated Jagger phoned Watts's hotel room in the middle of the night, asking, "Where's my drummer?" Watts reportedly got up, shaved, dressed in a suit, put on a tie and freshly shined shoes, descended the stairs, and punched Jagger in the face, saying: "Don't ever call me your drummer again. You're my f***ing singer!"
