Interesting hypothesis.
I was non-partison since 1979, recently became a Republican a few years ago.

So what I did to try and figure your idea out is think what if everyone in Oregon was Democrat?
We would still only have it come down to two candidate votes and as we saw with SB941 very very........VERY few even considered voting against it.
nehalemguy, why your idea sounds interesting the party is not the problem its the mind set of many a liberals. now granted there are some liberals that are even in the group here at NWFA that say they are pro-gun yet you dont see them moving to a conservative group. A liberal that is registered Democrat and pro-gun has to see that they are not making any ground. I feel that would make your vote be lost in the anti-gun swill that id out there.

I like and respect your ideas but such and overwelming mass would be needed as we have many a very ignorant republican that wont vote because they do not understand the voting process to the point the vote does matter. Your idea also reminds me of when people say all candidates suck so I will vote for mickey mouse. Giving your vote to another wont matter because for the minute one Democrat or Republican doesn't vote for whom you would have its cancelled out.

Good topic of discussion just not seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

I'd like to invite you to check out the Democratic Gun Owner's Caucus. http://www.dpo.org/communities/gun-owners
There are plenty of Dems who shoot. Getting our voice heard within the party just takes a bit of effort.

Sadly just like Oregon Firearms Federation only a few people know about it and they dont seem to have impact that is noticed. I never heard of this caucus for Dems, encouraging but they dont seem out front. What success have they had I be curious to read up on that and see what progress in the party there is.

the root of the problem is people, including gun owners, are not single issue voters (that is voting exclusively for the Second Amendment). There are too many other political topics that are equally important... my impression, considering how many new guns are sold each year (thats a lot of gun owners...), is that many gun owning conservatives no longer want to align themselves with many of the other typical Republican political positions (i.e.: climate change, gay rights, abortion, immigration, environmentalism, healthcare, whatever...)
its almost like there is some sort of paradigm shift taking place in American politics.... conservative voters have evolved a little but the conservative politicians have not and so they don't get elected and the 2A gets thrown out in the wash.

--not a fact or even an opinion, just a hypothesis--

Good analogy and probably very accurate.

well if my hypothesis is true then the only thing that's going to save the Second Amendment is the gun owning 2A supporting liberals are going to have to come out of the closet....

<broken link removed>

I know two Democrats that are very very pro-gun yet.... they vote for people I wish they didnt.
They tell me the weigh things kinda like you have suggested. So I do see first hand what you are talking about whether its larger I have no idea but I know two people that actually live your analogy as Pro-gun Democrats. If that makes sense and due to their view on gay Rights and Marijuana they vote Democrat.

The strategy of registering as the opposition was defined in the '60's. The mantra is to effect change from the inside not by demonstrating. So yes, if you can do it and the primary's are vulnerable then by all means do so. It a practice that is well know in addition to 'pocket votes'! Has been used by many since the 1800's!

Anyone got a link to the Republican Gun Owner's Caucus? just asking since it always dems that have to have their own name on everything. Did I miss the dem only part under the 2A somewhere?

With dems, it's a phonetic thing. Many of their voters get all excited over the word "caucus" not realizing the true (political) meaning of the word.

So, they think they'd like to cauc us gun owners. BOHICA dude.

Republicans for the most part are fine with people owning guns, and don't feel the need to caucus over our gun ownership.

;) J/K hehe.

It's also peculiar how all retarded elected officials, in print, are described as REPresentative so and so. Only if you look further and use a brain cell and look and see an R or D do you know what that might even mean. But no one does that. All those idiots are obviously REPublicans.. it says so right there!
Subliminal underhandedness is what it is.

I've always interpreted "REP" as short for "Representative" and even use "REP" sometimes when I speak or write about them. I've never associated "REP" with "Republican". It never even crossed my mind as a possibility until you mentioned it here.

This thread, is why I prefer the two words:

Liberal . . .

Conservative . . .

With the terms democrat (notice no contempt or vile promotion) & even republican, you get wide sways of political views.

JFK, a Democrat, is more Conservative than 10 John McCains put together . . .

I do not like the middle ground either, that libertarian thing.

I am a Staunch supporter of Conservative Values. Period. The more I see Democratic's & Republican 's EATING Their Own, I think what would a True Conservative do ???

I know they would not say they are ~pro gun~ like the several democrats for gun variations Posted above . . . What I saw on those pages (yes I went to them & READ them) was for the most part rah rah rah but vote Party Line . . . Only One website showed the Truth, that Democratic Members of Government Do Want to Take Our Guns!!!

And when I read that I said to myself, And so Why do you agree along Party Lines ?????

For those who REALLY want some good background on this, I suggest the (yes boring....) research of the Federalist & Anti-Federalist Papers, the articles for the most part being published "Anon" . . . But it was not hard to see Madison's writings, when read . . .

The biggest issue between our Original Founding Fathers Writings, and What became the current Constitution, is that a Third Party Did Infiltrate one of our Current ~Big Two~

And it's name is Communism !!! Ehh, "Progressive" is the Buzz word for Forward thinking Democrats, and Remember Bernie is a Self avowed Socialist . . . That is Only Three Goose a Steps Right of Communism ! ! !

~Progressive~ why the word seems to be Invented by Communists, just study Neutral History Books, One NOT reinterpreted by progressive/liberal/democratic Writers....

I say that because you will find Very Few Conservative a Writers in the Book Stores . . .

My 3.075 Cents worth, what with inflation and all

philipism for the Day: "like a kitten, I once was a liberal, but then I opened my Eyes".
