Report on Navy Yard shooting notes problems in Seattle

A report on the Washington, D.C. Navy Yard shooting in September, released this morning by the House Oversight and Government Reform committee, identifies several municipal police departments, including Seattle’s, as being on a list of “non-cooperating” agencies when it comes to providing information to federal authorities conducting background checks for security clearance.

Seattle PD arrested and documented.
Court declined to persue.
Background Investigator asked SPD for info.
SPD referred BI to Court.
Appears BI dropped the ball.
Not surprising, Secret clearance is required for about everyone.
BI workload must be incredible.
Absent any "stop signs" clearance was approved as a matter of course.

The number one problem is that DoD has designated areas such as this as "gun free zones" - Department of Defense (DoD) Directive 5210.56.

It's incredible to believe the restrictions on naval personnel from carrying firearms. It's not hard to understand why this went on for so long.

And background investigations are subordinate to DHS.
