Repairing a 1914 Winchester 1897

I broke the front grip on my 1897. This beauty with a 30 in barrel has been out of action ever since. Only now am I getting around to replacing it. What do I use on the raw wood to match it to the stock , add the gloss look, etc. How do I keep this one from breaking too? Can I protect it?
