My local gun club's CUP requires that every member have an annual orientation to go over basic safety rules, including site specific safety rules. My California bred and reared son and I went out today to do the orientation. I like this club because, among other things, it has a rifle range out to 600 yards.

My son, like I, is a flaming liberal. Yet he, like me, shook his head in disbelief at every story the master RSO told about range rule (and basic safety) violations. He, like I, looks forward to testing himself at 300, 400, 500, and 600 yards. He, like I, looks forward to perfecting hand loads for those distances.

Guns and shooting aren't red versus blue; they're engineering, machining, science, physics, athletics, curiosity, learning and so much more. We need to get past the BS and the politics and let the basics of fun come to the fore.

We've got every kind of person you could imagine at our club. We all get along just fine.

Unfortunately you cannot separate the politics in today's climate.
As an engineering / Newtonian mechanics type, you can probably appreciate the notion that it's not the weapon but the operator - and then you may see the absurdity of the hyperventilating restrictions being enacted in so many locations. The politics and reasonings may be a bottomless, Pandora's box, yet I'm deeply grateful the 2nd amendment exists. I could do without some of the belligerent discussions I have been in regarding why it should be left untampered.
I too, like you, appreciate the engineering aspect, and receive my greatest pleasure from the Zen of the sport.

Personally I like a good story once in a while. They help remind you that stupidity can be painful and if you have never heard them and take the time to listen you might just learn something.

There are a lot of the younger generation that don't take the time to listen to the stories that there parents or grandparents tell. Its a shame that they can't have the respect to shut there mouths and listen. Ok yes I got annoyed when I was younger but am damn glad now that I listened then.o_O

When we do our shows ... Both Dave and myself try to keep and steer the conversation to old guns , how to shoot them and the history behind them.
Our focus is to showcase old guns and history , not anger or alienate folks.

It can be difficult to keep politics out of the conversations ... but that isn't why we are doing our shows.
Maybe keeping in mind the why you are there rather than expressing your opinion may be for the best at certain times and places.

I am not saying that those topics should not be discussed or that you should not express your opinion.
Just remember where you are and what your are doing.
Is expressing your political thoughts going to move the conversation along or add anything useful?

Its tough to remain quiet when you hear and see things that fly in the face of what you hold dear.
But , often you are not going to "win" anything by engaging ... And you might just "lose" support or people's acceptance if you do engage.

Well.... that explains how/why you went off the rails in that "dam thread" and put words in everyone's mouth. Like it wasn't hard to conclude that then, but I didn't want to a$$-u-me and put words in your mouth.

Gee, since YOU made the statement... just how did they get that way and what political party/bent is at the forefront and continues TO CONSTANTLY MAKE GUNS "RED VS BLUE", and HYPER-politicizes it.... all under "common sense gun safety"?! Enjoy shooting what you like while you can WWShooter because your fellow "flamming liberals" that you keep voting for will eventually squelch it to REDICULOUS levels if not eliminate it, but then you'll probably just move to a free state like you did from Cali to Wash and go to Idaho (or something) then vote for the same crap that screwed up the places you left behind... and blame everyone else for the cesspool it became.

Classic Liberalism vs Progressive Liberalism.

I believe the VAST majority of the folks around here are fine with classic liberalism.

Sounds like that as a classic liberal in the sense you and I, even as a conservative see firearms the same, neither want to remove the enjoyment of the others Second Amendment rights.

;)
BTW what range has those yardages?

(I'm not starting a $hitstorm of political talk, just pointing out that there is a distinction between the grabbers and the huggers and which ones we gun owners don't have a problem with)

There you go again, a famous guy once said.
If people can't get out of the broad-brush stereotyping of each other then we're gonna get nowhere.

This black-or-white, all-or-nothing attitude that assumes people agree with everything a group believes in is so overly simplistic it creates a blindness that nothing can penetrate.

Who agrees with everything the R's want? I don't. Some stuff is a bad idea. Similarly if somebody agrees a little more with the D's that doesn't mean they agree with EVERYTHING some of the D's want, including the D's own bad ideas.

Finally, it's been my belief for a long time that if we are expecting the same two groups that created the situation in which we find ourselves to get us out of it, we're delusional.

If we focus on the things that we have in common, especially with people who share our affinity with the shooting sports, rather than promote a blind bias, we're all better off. Division is the real enemy here.

To that I have but one thing to say . . .

And Thank God! If it were not for Conservative Constitutionalists, like me and fortunately many others (I don't have a son), you and other quasi-2A flaming liberal progressives would be registering your single shot BB guns.

Cool story, bro.

I'm a member of the Izaak Walton Club here in Eugene. Nice ranges out to 200 yards.

Eugene Chapter

This is a world wide environmental organization, but they own and operate this range and they are staunch gun rights folks.

Here's the deal, I'm neither a Conservative nor a Liberal. I'm a strict constitutionalist. I support every part of the constitution, all 10 amendments in the Bill of Rights are sacred to me. I'm not a lawyer, but I did attend law school. There I learned how the constitution and the law work. The constitution, and the courts that enforce it, are the only things keeping us from becoming North Korea. When that system breaks down we will need the means to physically resist the Kim Jung Un types who will step forward.

I'm also very much in the camp of those who want to see prosperity restored to America, especially for its middle class and its poor. The middle class are the real job creators, not corporate America. There was once a time in this country, not so long ago, when a high school graduate could work in a factory and support a stay at home spouse, while buying a house and a new car every few years. They could afford to have kids and send them to college, take vacations, wear decent clothes, and have fun. It is corporate America that has exported those jobs and killed the middle class, while reducing the poor to virtual slavery in pursuit of one more nickel in profits.

I think we need to take care of those who can't take care of themselves, even if we end up supporting a few freeloaders. I think health care is a human right, and that we should all have access to it regardless of the ability to pay. And yes, I'm saying that I'm willing to pay more in taxes to provide this, and I think corporate America needs to do the same. I pay $15K for private health insurance for my family each year. So please raise my taxes $10K and make health care free!

So yes, I'm an odd duck politically. I will fight you tooth and nail if you try to abridge any of our rights under the constitution, or our system of laws. But at the same time, I think we all have certain debts and responsibilities to the society that provided us with a free education, safety from crime and international aggression, a moral code, and a system of laws that benefits all of us. I don't think we can pick and choose to support parts of that list. I have no use for ethical relativists.

Whoo-boy... here we go...:s0093: this ought to be a good thread.

I've got to think however, some of your liberal friends are going to burn your ACLU membership card if they find out you hang out here, let alone what they will do if they find out that you enjoy shooting evil guns... The good news is that we conservatives seem to be much more forgiving and adopt a "live and let live" attitude, so hey, you can always make the switch to conservative and find a home here when your "accepting" liberal friends try to run you out of town for not following their mantra.:s0090:

Actually, I'm a proud member of the ACLU, and I don't understand why anyone who supports the Constitution isn't also a member. Freedom isn't about supporting those who agree with us, it's about assuring that those who DON'T agree with us have an opportunity to voice their views.

I didn't mean to start a political thread, I only meant to show that guns aren't red or blue, they're just guns.

They sure do love "freedom" down there in Berkeley, what with all them rioters breaking stuff and assaulting people they disagree with, huh?

The ACLU disagrees with the SCOTUS ruling and does NOT support 2A rights for individual citizens, they believe it applies to State "militias", aka National Guard. The ACLU has morphed into another front for leftist ideals and they want a statist regime... as long as it's THEIR "tyrants of choice" in charge.

Fact.

The ACLU IS NOT about supporting freedom OR the Constitution! It is a socialist/communist organization and about as un-American and far left as one can get.

Following is a direct quote from Roger Baldwin, co-founder of the ACLU.
"I am for socialism, disarmament, and ultimately, for abolishing the state itself... I seek social ownership of property, the abolition of the properties class, and sole control of those who produce wealth. Communism is the goal. I don't regret being part of the communist tactic. I knew what I was doing. I was not an innocent liberal. I wanted what the communists wanted, and I traveled the United Front road to get it"

Shakespeare had it right when he said: "First, lets kill all of the lawyers..."
