So your saying the military just let him leave with his weapon? Or that he borrowed it and forgot to return it?

I guess i shouldn't have said he was issued this from the military as I am not for sure. still getting all the facts from my father. He said he had this gun and was heading to Korea and the got reassigned to the motor pool. The gun dealer said it was in 98% condition just a little dirt in the inside that needed to be clean then it would be 100% condition. Gun shop said it was worth 750 as it sits. But he could only give him half that amount due to the area that he would have to sell it in as the economy sucks right now.

from a guns value board website:

Thanks for taking the time to post photos. You have a nice rifle. The barrel date matches the serial # and is most likely the original. The stock stamps are "RA" for Remington Arms, and "FJA" for Frank J. Atwood, head inspector. Should be a circled "P" under the wrist. This is the proof mark applied after the rifle successfully fired a proof cartridge. Look for any other stamps on the stock for signs of rebuild.

These guns are very accurate. I have one just like yours that consistently shoots less than 2 inch groups at 100yds.

Most all the metal should be blued if in original condition. The receiver, barrel, and safety were parkerized.

If the bore on your rifle is in good shape, and metal appears to be in original condition, value is around $750.
