I was watching a WW2 training film on ammo. At the end they said to use the wooden crates to put the empty cases in to be sent back for reloading. I assume this only happened stateside or in secure areas overseas. But the thing that struck me was up until I saw this film I can't recall of ever hearing or read about the military reloading ammo. It would make sense since brass was in short supply during the war. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Dunno. Would make a good research paper subject. I know our WW2 USA military industrial complex at one point was about 2 months away from running COMPLETELY and ENTIRELY out of chrome ore.

I read somewhere that the early WW2 German Flak 88 anti aircraft gun had over 100 ball bearing. At the end of production they had ZERO ball bearings. Just flat bearings. Bombing of ball bearing plants.

That and some needed trace elements imported from Sweden?
