Reinstating firearm rights

So I have become friends with felon... that sounds weird... me and my wife have become good friends with a couple with some crap in their past, he has mentioned wanting to get his firearm rights restored, but he has no idea where to start. I don't know his exact situation or what he was convicted of nor do I feel like its my place to ask, but I wanted to be able to give him a good starting point. Is it something that you should have a lawyer for, or is it more of a start filling out paperwork for a year and sit and wait.

Depends on what he or she was charged for. Little known that some felons ARE allowed to handle firearms though they may not be able to buy them. Depending on the charges though it could be ten years or more in Oregon.
