Hi Everyone,
Last Saturday, I took Red Frog Team's "Intro to AR-15 class". It took place at TCGC. I thought that the class was very comprehensive, and very well run. The instructor, Garrick Fernbaugh is an ex-Seal with instruction and curriculum-planning credentials. With two safety instructors there as well for our class of about seven, the class was not only well run, but very safe.
Starting with field-stripping the AR-15 platform (required for this class- other "Rifle X00" are open to other platforms), we moved to the shooting phase. We zeroed our rifles (iron or optics) from the 50 yard line, then moved into various shooting positions, which Fern called "fundamental". Standing, kneeling, sitting, and prone. And not just plopping down into these positions, but getting into them purposefully and correctly, keeping the weapon on-target, and then getting up again "Get up ready to fight!" with the muzzle and the sights on-target, then "safe 'em and hang 'em".
The class ended after about 200 rounds expended with a final "test", starting at the 50 yard line, and then moving to the 25 and 15 yard lines, (not shooting and moving), utilizing various positions. New targets were up for the test, and scored at the end.
We finished up with an AAR, and completion certificates for the participants. Shannon, a shooter and the business manager, was there too as one of the safeties, and really helped keep the class running smoothly and provided a lot of insight. She was on my end of the firing line, and helped me quite a bit.
Overall, I am really impressed with Red Frog Team. I've taken a few other classes in this vein, and this class was easily abreast or even a bit better than others.
They have a pistol pipeline, a rifle pipeline, and a concealed pipeline, each starting at their "Intro" level, and then moving up successive tiers. Fern said that the curriculum is expanding, and we may see more classes and more levels soon. There are also some LEO-specific courses for our friends in blue.
See more here.
