Go with a 12 guage magnum? What brand? Thinking of remote wilderness camping with a woman where 4 footed bears and wolves are known as well as two footed drinking nutjobs travel with pickups. About 30 miles off road and 60-70 from the law. Better go with a 20 guage magnum? What brand?

I know you put this in the semi automatic forum.

Methinks a pump action 870 or similar would suit the bill quite nicely.

I have to recommend you look at the Remington line for either a Pump(870) or Semi-Automatics(11-87) will work very nicely.

I'd stick with a 12ga. Just because of ammo.

Remmy 870 Magnum, or Mossy 590 would be the best choice for off the shelf!
If you want to shop around, a vintage WInchester 1897 or Mod 12 would be even slicker, though not able to feed/fire 3 in magnum, really no need!
For semi, Mossy 930 is hard to beat!

The answer is always 870.

If you are looking for HD roit, you have to ask yourself, are you actually going to use 3" shells? Reality is most people stick to 2-3/4

Some of these come with 8 round tube capacity or 6; given the context would six rounds be more than enough or if I am going to do the buy, just go for the 8 round out of the gate? I have a 20 guage that takes 3" magnum rounds; would that work just as well? I think the pump tube is 5 rounds. The 20 that I have is a 1960s era Savage 67; perfect condition. What do you think. I am up for semi or pump.

More then 5 rounds just makes it heavy, and if you wanted to add a light or pig sticker, the mag tube extensions don't work too well!
Both the 870 and 500/590 will speed feed really quick, so you can alternate between buck and slug on the fly, or run special ammo if needed!

Is it a really a riot gun if it can't take a 20 round drum mag? ;)

Saiga 12 :)

My first 12 gauge was a Remington 870 with an extended tube - 7+1 rounds. It would seem that or a Mossberg 590 would fit the criteria you specified, but if I was genuinely concerned about 4 legged animals and 2 legged varmints out in the woods I would lean toward a semi-auto rifle in .308

20g will kill but it's about half a 12g. 12g has more options that are locally available. It depends on personal preference. All so consider if a wife or kid will be using it

870s are 4 plus 1, you can add magazine extensions of plus 1, 2 for 18 barrels and plus 3 for 20" barrels

My FLEET of (upgraded) M500's and M930's would disagree with you.. o_O

HOWEVER.... we concur with sticking to 12ga 2-3/4" shells for said application. ;)

I really like the older Remington 870 Wingmaster shotguns for this purpose.
Mine is picture below...and is from 1981, with a 18 inch barrel , 12 gauge and Improved Cylinder choke without any lights , extensions and such.
It works well with bird shot , # 4 buck and 00 buck , plus slugs...all 2 3/4 size shells.
I did add a leather ammo carrier for the stock and will add a sling in the future.....

All that said...its also tough to beat the Mossberg 500 / 590 series of shotguns.

Would 20 guage "000" buck shot work in this situation? I think these are 2 3/4" shells and they are loaded with 20 pellets. There is a 3" shell available as well.

Extremely happy with my 1187 police, very soft shooting. It is a bit heavy for long hikes tho. rem blue box or hotter never had an issue, low brass not so much. ACF4CEA7-5490-4904-9E9F-829B8F894CD6.jpeg

I wouldn't buy a current production remington shotgun. I've personally broken the last two 870s I've owned. One on the first day owning it. Wasn't abusing them or even running them hard. 1100 and 11-87 gas systems are more finicky than they are worth with various loads.

At the same price point, I'm buying Mossberg. I'd take a Maverick 88 over an 870 express. The 500 or 590 is even better and ambidextrous. I don't consider the 590A1 as necessary if you're not real hard on your guns. For a semi-auto, 930s are a great value. A little more money gets you into an FN.

Ive been debating on this style for along time for home defence with some mini shells but feel it might be useless with some full load buck?

I have two older Wingmaster shotguns...
One in 12 gauge and the other in 20 gauge.
The 2 3/4 000 buck works fine in my 20 gauge...I wouldn't have any doubts about it working for a two or four legged threat...if placed correctly .
