I reload my own buckshot and slugs very cheap. Primers and powder have gone up along with the 1 x fired shells cost but WAY below factory prices.. much higher percentage of "bad" finished product (VS brass cased ammo) means you just use those for training/target shooting/survival hunting
Was given much free lead/powder as well as lots of free birdshot/skeet type 1X shells, and 125 lbs of small birdshot pellets (7/8) but you can't count on that
Okay, the math is simple; 200 rounds=8 boxes $33.18/8= $4.14/box w/ reclaimed lead @$25 per bag.
Cost of lead per box with reclaimed shot $14.10/8= $1.76
New lead at $48/bag ( Bi-Mart last week); Difference $48/$25=1.92 times as expensive
$1.76*1.92= $3.38/box for new lead. $4.14-$1.76+$3.38= $5.76/box with new lead.
I have the cheapo lee loader now for many years that recently Im making 12ga slugs & #00 buck for my saiga 12,yes they are cheap plastic but not everything cheaply built is crapola, its more robust than one would ever guess, Ive run thousands of rounds thru it over the years......its like a timex watch cheap but keeps on ticking
hard to save money on trap loads but making slugs & buckshot, now were having fun on the cheap
25.00 for 25lbs of shot reclaimed, 73.00 for 5000 wads, 115.00 for 8lbs of powder, 110.00 for 5000 primers
.02 a shell for primer=.55 a bob for primers
.015 a shell for wads=. 36 a box for wads
.07 a shell for lead for 1 1/8=1.76 a box for lead
.037 a shell for powder 18 gns= .92 a box for powder
Total cost per box= 3.59 ish a box shoot that load for my singles and doubles.
Just bought 300lbs from Rattlesnake Mountian Gunclub. Selling now for 27 a bag become a member ya get it for 25.
I shoot registered PITA and ATA targets and have no problem at all with reclaim. In fact I shot 1 oz for everything except caps. If I switched to new shot it would cost around 4.90 a box for me. It might not sound like much savings but over 8-10000 rounds a year it adds up.
