I think some people simply don't understand economics/capitalism. The only reason to be mad about over priced items is because you want it and either can't afford it, can't find it cheaper, or simply don't agree with the value. At which point you either watch and wait, move on, offer a lesser amount, or bite the bullet and pay the asking price. Supply and demand. I love capitalism. A simple agreement between two parties to pay a specified amount for a good or service.
Exactly, I wanted to say just this but thought the OP would castrate me.... o_O

Luckily I could give a flying Fck what anyone thinks about me. Haha. It's a free forum. What's the worst that someone can do to me?

Actually, @Sweep1308 's post was very specifically about people listing prices of accessories and seemingly expecting to be able to recover prices of accessories when they sell main item. It was a thoughtful post about the value of such lists and accessorized guns. It was NOT about prices in general at all. Nor was it a generic complaint about high prices. It was an original thoughtful observation. So OP was NOT :s0013:. And he got back a few thoughtful responses plus a lot of attacks on him as if his was the standard complaint about high prices. And even some posts putting him down for not having participated more in the past, or not having been a member longer, or not being a supporting member, whatever. All uncalled for. Now he's getting lectures claiming that he doesn't know what capitalism is by people who do not seem to know the difference between capitalism, a very complex economic theory, and a small minimally-regulated free market in a particular class of goods sold in a particular place, a much more limited construct. I wouldn't blame OP if at this point he felt a certain inclination to :s0124:.

We need an emoji saying READ THE ORIGINAL POST!

And perhaps another emoji saying I APOLOGIZE FOR NOT REREADING THE ORIGINAL POST.

Is there an emoji for claiming to have read the original post but missing the point? The OP was not merely complaining about people trying to recover the costs of accessories and "upgrades", but clearly took issue with those accessories/upgrades allegedly justifying a higher overall price. So yes, his (I assume "his") rant essentially does boil down to complaining about prices being too high:

I was trying to figure out how to word this. Thank you. It truly does boil down to complaining about how someone prices/values THEIR item. Whether or not it sells is another topic. Complaining and b!tching about it just comes across as pathetic pandering. That's not directed towards the OP to be clear. That's everyone and anyone here who cries about price/pictures/format ect. Move along.

Well, I do support capitalism, but i was, more or less, sharing how i felt that all these "accessories" didn't impact overall value. Especially based on purchase price. I made reference to how minor cosmetic improvements don't impact value of a home, etc. Seems SOMEONE got my point and isn't just attacking me in the name of capitalism or gree speech. It was prefaced with both /rant and a disclaimer that I didn't expect people to agree. More to inspire conversation. And that it did. Most of which was off topic, but whatever. Life goes on. Ask what you want. Justify decisions or prices however you want. Just don't be surprised when you're shot a "low bid" based on reasonable valuation of an item.

I stand by my statement that most investments aren't financially beneficial for the initial investor. Is a car with 20k miles valued as a new one is? Anything mechanical has a lifespan. And with maintenance and replacement parts, it's life gets extended. But it's rarely valued at or above original purchase price, regardless of accessories. Exceptions include collectable and rare items, as well as limited release.

Nowhere did I complain about cost of a specific item on this site. Just discussion of general valuation. And yes, value is a very subjective topic.

That being said, I learned new things as a result of this thread. Most of which are completely unrelated. Such as, Washingtonians can't own machine guns. Period.

For those of you butt hurt about my truth, take this into account: many upgrades you do to your home don't actually increase the value. Especially cosmetic upgrades. Fancy dishwasher? No value change. Top of the line heat pump? No value change. These items just increase the desirability of your item vs another item, and may lead to a quicker sale. The investment is unchanged.

The OP was not merely complaining about people trying to recover the costs of accessories and "upgrades", but clearly took issue with those accessories/upgrades allegedly justifying a higher overall price.
I did read the OP's original post and if there was a crap dishwasher, or a whatever other thing done on the cheap, I'd discount the item.

So maybe it didn't increase the value of the item but it certainly didn't decrease it.

based on reasonable valuation of an item.
Who makes that decision, you? the only choice any of us can make is whether or not we want the item, anyone's notion of value is only good to them and not the seller. The problem is a lot of people have a "blue book value" mindset and as such think even a fair deal (to most) is somehow asking too much...

Right now I have an item for sale that I upgraded two things on, I am not charging extra for the upgrades that I installed only the main item itself. It is brand new and I am still asking for less then you can buy it from a online vendor (if you can find it) yet nobody has contacted me about it, am I still charging to much? I would say that I have it priced fairly but if a person looks at it with the idea "Well, since it did not come directly from (enter name here) then I will only give you $.50 to the dollar therefore you are asking to much"

Blue book value mindset, once someone else touches it magically its worth less money?

There are actually just a few accessories or modifications I would pay extra for. A red dot or slide milled for one. Or threaded barrel where its nonstandard in a semiauto. In some cases a scope. Most accessories aren't what I want. I like rubber grips that tame recoil, not expensive wood grips however beautiful. I'm unlikely to want the spendy holster which probably doesn't fit my carry style. I'm likely to be actively suspicious about DIY trigger jobs, as they can make a gun unreliable. I detest magnaporting, which blasts the sound back in my face. And I'd prefer stock guns to ones modified by anyone other than the factory or well known specialists in such modifications. I also prefer guns that come with the goodies I want as stock rather than ones I'm gonna have to work on a lot before I get something satisfactory. This represents the manufacturer and I having similar concepts about what the gun is for.

Mostly when I see a highly modified gun, I skip it, because the seller usually wants at least about a third to half of what he paid for them, and they aren't worth that to me. In most cases they actually lessen the value of the gun rather than enhance it in my eyes. But there are those exceptions.

Then there are the kitchen table "Built" AR's and the like, with every single part from the catalogs from page 6 to 28, NO THANK YOU! Using the term "CUSTOM" doesn't jive, if it wasn't built by a well known Manufacture or Specialist, your AR ain't worth sh!t, let alone more then a standard factory one!

I send the real gougers to the ignore list, especially if they are brand new members and are obviously here to take and not give. But I won't say a word.

My gripe with the classifieds is the quality of the people involved. I've dealt with more flakes, scammers and idiots in the last year than the 9 years before this combined.

That's because armslist died during the Rona ( not from it, just coincidence).

All the craigslist, armslist, offerupians are looking for fresh foraging grounds.

It may also be that with such a steep rise in demand for guns and so many new to guns participating, that unusual numbers of predators have been attracted. Or would-be predators. And maybe also more fools. When a market grows exponentially a while people can do crazy things. Like offer thousands for a tulip bulb sure it will be worth even more tomorrow.

I heard a story about a ship full of cans of sardines that anchored at Anchorage right after the end of WWII. People had been surviving on game, with much of the ordinary food rationed and even that mostly never made it to Alaska because of the shortage of shipping. So everyone was excited by the ship full of canned sardines. So excited that someone promptly bought the entire cargo and another guy bought it from him at a higher price. And every day there was bidding and buying and selling and the price rose higher and higher. Several weeks later the boatload of sardines was still in the harbor and the buying and selling just got more frenzied and the price higher. Then someone was so crude as to go inspect the cargo, and came back to report that salt water had got to the cans and rusted them through, and the sardines were rotting. And the response? "No problem. Them's not eatin' sardines. Them's just buyin' and sellin' sardines."

The way I look at it is if the price is too high just ignore it. Just today I saw an add for a used gun that is 30-40% over the price of a new one and no claimed upgrades/mods. The market sorts this stuff out, no need to stress about it imo.

That's why I am here. Once armslist required a payment/subscription I looked elsewhere. And in all honesty if this forum did the same I would act accordingly.

Armslist was really dumb to charge as much as they did. Could've asked for $1.99 but no. I won't use that site anymore either.

One other observation the 0/0/0 people that joined like a week ago trying to step in on a deal ! The funny thing is the OP has not been on since June and the vulture most likely doesn't know how to check lol .
