Hello I have a question about doing a trade.

There is a person I am interested in trading my rifle for his handgun but he lives in Washington.

I have never bought sold or traded a gun to a person from a different state and was wondering about it.

I know we must use ffl legally and if we do trade I will absolutely do so.

It could be tricky as each of you may have to come to each others state to do the transfer. He will have to bring or send handgun down to Oregon FFL for transfer to you.

Is your rifle semi-auto?

Yes it's a semi auto.
So he will have to bring handgun down to Oregon FFL for transfer to you.

If you can find an Oregon FFL who will transfer Semi-auto to WA resident it will be an easy swap. If you can't find an Oregon FFL who will do the transfer you will have to bring rifle up to WA.

That will complicate the deal. Who goes first? How do you make sure the person who goes second follows through?

If you have to take rifle to WA for transfer, you might consider requiring a deposit equal to value of trade be paid to whoever transfers their firearm first. When the second trade is done that deposit would be returned. Just an idea.
