Hi,

I just recently got a Savage 99c with a Weaver K4 on it, in .308 Win. I was curious how old it is? the serial number is B500303. Also I keep seeing people say things about "look for a letter in front of the lever boss" what's the lever boss?

Thanks

In 1949, Savage began stamping a tiny, lightly impressed oval on the lower, front side of the "lever boss".

The Â"lever bossÂ" is the extension of the lower part of the receiver into which the lever fits and rotates. Inside the oval, Savage stamped the letter "A" together with other numbers which are apparently inspectorÂ's numbers.

On many Model 99 rifles, this Â"ovalÂ" is indistinct or difficult to read as are the letters and numbers inside the oval.

The letters Â"OÂ" and Â"QÂ" were skipped and not used due to their similar appearance.

Lever Boss Codes:

A = 1949
B = 1950
C = 1951
D = 1952
E = 1953
F = 1954
G = 1955
H = 1956
I = 1957
J = 1958
K = 1959
L = 1960
M = 1961
N = 1962
P = 1963
R = 1964
S = 1965
T = 1966
U = 1967
V = 1968
W = 1969
X = 1970

Lever boss, it's the "hinge" of the receiver to the lever, the mark should be on the forward side of it.
The clip fed models were made from 1965 to 2001.

Welcome to the world of 99's. You'll find them to be alluring and addictive.

Then you'll eventually own a .250-3000. Then you will understand completely. Nothing else will matter.

I had a 250-3000 take-down threaded for a Maxum silencer, my grand dad used it on antelope. Grand-ma wanted the money so I sold it.
Love my 99 in 308 though, the perfect saddle gun!
