Question about selling a handgun

(Didn't know if should post this in this sub forum or in legal. Be gentle )

So thinking of selling my XD40 to a gunshop to upgrade to something else (maybe a g29). My question is how does this process work if the XD40 I possess was bought when private sales were legal without an ffl and the firearm in question is not registered to me and I believe I am the third owner. Does this matter or is there a process to this.

I doesn't matter, the gun shop takes it in, they check to make sure its not stolen, and you then you continue on with getting your new pistol.

Figured as much. I'm originally from NY were handing in a gun without your name attached would raise a lot of eyebrows. Thanks for the quick reply!

i just figured when I bought my ar at a gunshop that when they backrounded me it associated the serial with my name. I miss private sale :/
