In the past few weeks there have been times when I have not been able to get on NWFA using my cell phone due to a WiFi filter and I am wondering if anyone else is running into this. The first time was at a Walmart in Salem. The second was at my school (although I had been able to last school year).

Is anyone else running into this? And I am curious as to where.

P.S. Yes, I know you can turn off the WiFi and just use data to bypass the filter.

I have an unlimited plan so I won't use public WiFi for any reason.

To many ways to get burned if your not careful, I'd rather not risk it unless it's an emergency or something

Several places - Dr's offices, Casinos, a hotel.
I also have unlimited cell data, and seldom use public wifi these days.

Out IT Director tells me anything "gun related" is a common setting on filters for businesses. Funny thing though - I can usually pull up many other gun related sites. Filters aren't perfect.

Not to the best of my recollection. I setup the network at my office, so it won't ever be blocked there. Thinking of the places we traveled this summer, none of them did so, other than the Walfart you mentioned. I'm not even kind of surprised Starbucks would, though am a little that a Wally World would.

P.S. I remember one of my relation was in the Air Guard and after an upgrade on base, the official Air Force site was blocked for a short while, because of "violent content". :s0112:

They started doing this where I work shortly before the big update here. I was hoping maybe the update here would fix it but no. Keeps saying some certificate is not right and will not let me on. So I have to turn off the wifi when I look now :(

If you find it is blocked then the organization providing the WiFi may be using a product such as Netsweeper.
Web Content Filtering • Netsweeper

What they have probably done is configured their WiFi/network to use the DNS servers provided by a service such as Netsweeper. The service then maintains a list of blocked domains (e.g. northwestfirearms.com).

As @Joe13 suggested, upgrade your mobile-phone service to an unlimited plan and then use that connection. I have an iPhone and can have my other devices (e.g. laptop, iPad) connect to my iPhone's "Personal Hotspot" and get online. Safer too.

I use a VPN for security reasons, but it also bypasses the wifi filters. This has worked at all the casinos mentioned and at the doctor/dentist.

Lots of public WiFi networks don't have the proper security certificates that NWFA requires. Not really "blocked".

I never use public WiFi. I don't trust that it's secure especially if I'm accessing any websites that require a password to enter.

and this...

Depending on the device, some just require a "turn on VPN" in settings while some devices will run it all the time.
