I could add; somewhere along the line, a strict disciplined routine should (must) develop; an imparative.

Every time it is picked up, the status of handgun/weapon needs to be confirmed.

Daily Function Check; verify the safety, verify a chambered round (or not).

Check the mags; full and fully seated.

I have seen negligent discharges. I could have had one when someone gave me an empty rifle. I racked the slide and a round came out. It's not about trust in your friends that know better.
