The pawn shops have some full retail beat up stuff MOST of the time lol
Like everything everywhere, you have to treat weapons browsing like a job and check everyplace a couple times daily. I've never scored at a pawn shop but I know many who have, especially in outlying areas. In Idaho, most LGS are pawn shops too. PAX

I did well in some Denver pawn shops they wanted to move stuff ! I see here there is a shop that has had some pistols for several years maybe they don't need the cash lol

My local LGS won't budge on any items. I tried the beatdown on him once and he said: "Somebody will buy it". He was correct, if it sits long enough. That particular shop was a gun snob to begin with. Unless you were planning an African Safari, you weren't chit to him, and they never had milsurp or C&R. Then one year they must have gotten an estate, and they put racks on the floor for display. At that time, they must not have had someone to evaluate the iron because much was below street prices. I scored on a Bakal SXS 12ga coach, 2 Albanian SKSs, 2 Chinese SKSs and a MUMd T38 for well below market. Didn't take him long to rectify that situation. PAX

The problem with online sale in Oregon is that in addition to the firearm you have to price in the $50 transfer fee. I bought a M1A from a member here, but the shop he liked charged $75 for the transfer. If shopping online, sites like Guns.com or GunBroker add a processing fee and shipping. More and more the seller charges another 3% to use a credit card.
So anything I see, I have to plan to pay $80 - $100 more than asking price. If it pencils out to be within $50 of retail, I buy from a local shop.

That's what I have ended up doing in the past. When I lived in CA buying a gun online meant paying an extra $100 (or more in some cases) in dealer fees when it shows up. It hardly makes used guns worth buying at all unless you get a good deal face to face.

I'm in Kali and the receiving fees are a deal breaker for anything less than $500 bucks. The cheapest is $118 to receive and DROS. PAX
Holy crap that's nuts. I found a supressor for $200 less than anywhere else but I'm hesitant to buy it cuz ffl will charge $125 to submit computer stuff and transfer. It's just too damn much despite being a good deal on the suppressor. It just kills the deal.

Right now the Rossi R92 is looking pretty good at 750-ish new for the 24" octagon barrel version. Something I could short stroke would be nice but I'm not trying to be fast, I just like to tinker. Other than that the R92 is exactly what I want at a decent price new, but I'm not in a rush.

And personally I don't mind if the handguns match, in fact I think it would be neat if they didn't. So long as they have the same barrel length and feel generally
the same in hand I don't care if they are different colors and come at different times. Like I said, no rush.
I have that exact model. The entire insides needed polished to feed 357 , 38s were rough. After a couple hours of polishing internals it cycles like butter

Well that sucks.
Personally I have done pretty well online because Oregon doesn't have sales tax. I've been looking at a mini 30 on guns.com. (I know, nothing to write home about.). But it's listed as new and $300 less than retail. This morning the gave me a code for 5% off. Which almost covers the transfer. Still processing and shipping but better than nothing.

My old 01 FFL bud that I used to use was an enabler. He only charged $25 bucks to receive and DROS one 4473 form, and he would wait until I got 5 guns to fill the form if I asked him to. Could take 6 months. That's how you end up with 40 SKSs. He hung up his shingle because the Kali details were getting too complicated for him to remember at his age, and he was afraid he'd start making mistakes. PAX

If all it needs is a little polishing then it seems like a good deal. I have only owned two foreign made budget guns, a CZ (Huglu made) shotgun and a Chiappa O/U combo gun. Both have had serious gun-breaking malfunctions and needed to be sent back for warranty work. Overall that CZ is a pretty nice gun for the money now that it works right, but that Chiappa feels cheap, it's very flimsy, rough/sharp corners, etc.

Never had any kind of issues with my S&Ws or American-made Winchesters. The current Winchester 92s aren't crazy expensive compared to similar offerings by the replica brands, but they only offer the 24" octagon barrel on the "deluxe takedown" model that costs twice as much as the basic carbine and short rifle. If it were closer in price I'd just buy the Winchester, but anything "deluxe" is just wasted money for me, I just want a field grade user.

Every time I get the gun buying itch I start browsing online classifieds (not just here but all the usual online places) and it seems like used guns cost just as much, if not more, than buying new.

I'll add that I'm usually looking to save a few bucks on something specific and somewhat common, I'm not looking for something rare, long out of production or just browsing for a screaming deal on something random.

Where's the best place to look if you already have something in mind? Or just forget it and buy new? At least that way I get a warranty.
There's a lot of good used gun stores around and a lot of stuff you can't find new anymore

I generally buy offbeat, out of production, guns these days, so new versus used doesn't mean anything. I have very specific interests and often play the waiting game for what I'm after. Price is a factor, but not the only one, and generally not the primary consideration. (On the flip side, there are some older guns that can be had at pleasantly surprising rates these days.)

That aside, I occasionally buy a new piece. And I'm pretty much seeing what OP posted about newer used guns: as in priced close to, at, or surprisingly often over a NIB example. Why would I pay more for a used piece, from an unknown source, with less secondary items (e.g., box, manual, etc.), of unknown mechanical condition, and possibly no factory warranty? Does not compute. A few mouse clicks and a new one shows up at the local FFL and done.

I'm looking for cowboy guns, I need two Vaqueros and a lever rifle.
It's been my experience in this area that Ruger Vaqueros (original or New Model) aren't often seen as used guns. I'm not saying they are rare, I'm saying they don't appear to turn over very often.

Re. the Rossi lever gun. My opinion, spend the extra money and get a new Marlin or a Henry even. Or a used Winchester.

Regulatory and shipping issues are very much a consideration in buying a gun. Especially in Wash. state, where we have hefty sales tax and the WSP BGC fee, plus dealer transfer fee. If it's face-to-face private transaction, the sale tax is exempt. But still an issue of you buy online. Plus I noticed lately that Gunbroker now chargers a 1% buyer's fee, similar to auctioneer "buyer's premium."

Living farther away from the majority of guns that are advertised makes it more difficult as well.

Pre SB 941 traveling was NOT so much an issue as it was the ONLY additional expense and at the time MOST sellers understood this and well, it was often taken into consideration and 'worked' into the deal such as the seller agreeing to a partial meetup to help with the travel.

However now with FFL fees, the possibility of a BGC delay and other issues traveling to buy a gun (of any major distance) is simply not 'in the cards'.

SB 941 destroyed a big part of the gun 'hobby' for me, in that prior to it I probably bought, sold or traded 5-7 guns a year but that came to an end.

Also because buying was much easier pre SB 941 sellers knew this and prices of used guns were much more competitive and deals easier to make.

There have been some decent prices on revolvers in the classifieds lately, a couple of security 9 semi autos and a couple of hellcats over there, dirt cheap right now. 😀

I loved Denver area pawn shops , everything was negotiable. Cash in hand and not scared to haggle then you'd get a deal for sure sometimes hella good deals. Idk if it's that times have changed or it's this area but around here pawn shops rarely budge much and are way overpriced (I always hear "it sells online for" or "new they cost"....ok I'll go buy one online see you later then 😂)

Very unlikely to have what you want due to a small inventory but I gotta shout out dwjimports.

They sell most stuff on gunbroker, where it is for the going rate, but on their site they have gunsmith specials for very fair prices. Usually a gunsmith special is a ripoff, but I got my walam 48 from them for just $275 as its missing the loaded chamber indicator, an impossible to find part.

But the thing runs perfect! And they go for double that complete on gunbroker. So I always check their inventory regularly. Most of their gunsmith specials just have minor problems.

Their business models is buying things in Europe, auction or surplus from police etc. So that's the kind of inventory they stock. But it is small, I heard they used to be bigger. A lot of these type places just sell century imports etc but they actually do their own importing. So not only was my walam a ridiculously good price, it has the least annoying import mark of just about anything in the country! Just a small and neat mark on the frame. The batch of walam imports a decade ago were just awful with massive markings.

I also thought there were some well priced revolvers and 1911's recently in the classifieds, I bought one of them...
On the other hand, I reload for six different cartridges and look frequently at those classifieds. I saw the same projectiles priced higher than I could buy online directly from the manufacturer and have shipped to my house. Also, many primers can now be found online less expensively than during the last shortage and if you buy 3-5 thousand and look for a sale you can often find free or cheap shipping. Some of the ones being resold do not reflect the current pricing available new...
Like any type of item being resold, firearm related items vary widely in their pricing...
My pickup is getting old (25 years) and my transmission recently went out. It has 250,000 miles and I thought this might be a good time to replace the truck with something newer and with less miles, but after looking at prices in the used pickup market, I am just going to deal with my transmission.
