Came across a pre-estate sale where after chatting, they said that they have a vietnam era colt m16 for sale. There is no serial number on it. Is this normal for a rifle of this era?
Also, when asking about the lack of a serial number, they claimed that in Oregon, one can possess 1 "ghost gun" and that it was not necessary to do a transfer with a dealer.

Is any of this accurate?

They are some lying mf'ers. Do you have SUCKER written across your forehead?
Were they wearing anything like this?

My grandfather served this war and the Korean war, he took home both Colts, they were serialised. Not sure why theirs is not.

No this is not normal.
( Edit to add : for a M16 of this era . )

They could be mistaken :
In regards to the lack of a serial number....
As well as with the actual ID of the rifle.
Or....
The could be lying for whatever reason.

In any event...it is wise to heed the old saying of : "Buy the gun , but don't buy the story."
Also worth considering is : If something is too good to be true...then it probably is.

There r only 2 possible explanations here. Either they are knowingly trying to entrap you, which is common with an atf sting operation for example, or they are unknowingly feeding u a bunch of crap. Either way you the buyer are responsible for your actions. If dealing with bottom feeders and taking risks like u would be here u will need to be prepared to pay the possible consequences.

Not using an ffl is illegal and them telling u that you don't need to go through an ffl is either intentional lying or just ignorant hogwash. Unregistered full auto is illegal. 1 ghost gun is pure hogwash or intentional lying. If you want to learn how to try to register an unregistered machine gun, then Ian at forgotten weapons has an excellent video on that. In short, most likely you would have to turn it in to atf and never see it again but watch the video and make ur own judgements.

Some machine guns that are found in attics or under beds after someone dies aren't all illegal.
They may have a tax stamp and a lawyer versed in NFA laws can reach out to the ATF to establish if it does have one.
The lawyer acts as a go between you and the ATF while the issue of legality of the firearm is proven and who the lawful heir will be.

Former atf sting operation in Gresham, OR FYI. They set up a fake smoke shop accross the street from a middle school to catch illegal drug and gun buyers.

My guess is that it's (maybe!) an "M-16" parts kit on an 80% lower and the dead guys family doesn't know any better
But they "know" that an ffl is not required? and "know" that in OR ppl are allowed one ghost gun? Hmmmmm... sounds extremely fishy to me. I wouldn't trust one word coming out of their mouth personally. Massive amount of warning signs here.

I don't think it's even legal to sell any unserialized home made gun as far as I know (somebody correct me if I'm wrong please). I know some old manufactured guns never had serial numbers though for what that's worth.

My dad served in Nam with an M14. He did not get to bring it home. It is probably killing Russians in Ukraine right now.
I do not know if it was legal but it followed him to Florida and was discovered after his death. They kw belong to some SOT FFL after a trade of cash, of course.

Not saying entrapment hasn't ever been used by the .gov, but that wasn't the case with this one

Analysis[edit]

Early analysis questioned whether entrapment by FBI operatives was involved,[22][23] an Oregonian columnist asking "how far would Mohamud have traveled down that road without the help of those very operatives?"[22] Noting "astonishing similarities" to a simultaneous case near Baltimore, Maryland, The Oregonian quoted a New York University expert that such cases were "a strategy the FBI set upon years ago."[24] Presumably aware of legal defenses based on issues of entrapment, FBI agents reportedly offered Mohamud multiple alternatives to a bombing with mass casualties, including prayer. Mohamud reportedly insisted he wanted to play an "operational" role, and even wanted to pick the target for the bombing.[14] He had also been told several times that his planned bomb could kill women and children, and was given multiple opportunities to back out, but he told agents: "Since I was 15 I thought about all this... It's gonna be a fireworks show... a spectacular show."[19] Christopher Dickey of Newsweek said the FBI "took no chances with the court of public opinion" to make sure that Mohamud did not appear to be a victim of entrapment.[25] Noting that key evidence from an alleged July 30 meeting may already be missing, a court ordered the FBI to preserve remaining media and recording equipment.[6] Noting past behavior by the FBI in similar cases, New York lawyer Martin Stolar asserted the absence of such recordings was intentional. "Once somebody's been induced, and they agree to do the crime, that's when the recording starts.... He's already been induced to commit the crime, so everything on the tape is bubblegum."[26]

A The Washington Post feature traced the radical roots of the ideology held by young Somalis such as Mohamud to the Islamicization of Somalia following the collapse of the socialist government of Mohamed Siad Barre.[27]

Somali Foreign Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Omar said "Mohamud's attempt is neither representative nor an example of Somalis. Somalis are peace-loving people," adding that the Somali government was "ready and willing" to assist in preventing future attempts.[28]

I'd think that the parts kits would be harder for someone to obtain. I'd think that there aren't many shared parts with the semi brother of it. My guess is that they don't know much about firearms other than what the tv tells them and it's only a semi, which lots of people call automatic. Pure speculation on my part. As to the OP, if you want to buy it, only do so above the table at a local FFL. No use getting in big trouble over something like that.
