Not a bad idea to have ready I guess lmao. It's a sticker actually came in that way I just picked it up today from my FFL.So what is the lube on the barrel for - to make it easier to slide up an ATF's rear endend

Is that a dash # gun? I've got a no-dash that looks just like it. Got it from a guy that got it from a woman who's husband owned it and passed away. We drove to Grants Pass for it. It looked like he only drove it to church one Sunday a month! Very faint turn line and little staining on the cylinder face. My grips are a bit lighter and date is within serial # date range. Those gun are quite the hand full, and absorb full power .357 Mag wonderfully! And my bucket list S&W 686 from my good friend Mike, last buy Pre-114 (besides some 5.56 shell holders!)

This is a "Show Pictures" thread. Where's the pictures of your model 29?That's a nice one!
I have a nickel 586 that looks just like it. I think I paid $250 in the late '90s.
I love those S&W revolvers, don't know which is my favorite. My first revolver was a Dan Wesson in the late '80s, and my second was a S&W 29-2 I bought in the early '90s - smooth rosewood grips, deep, rich bluing, mahogany presentation box. I still have it; I guess I'd have to say it's still my favorite.
I don't know the difference? I just though those big ol' square-Butt grips were target grips? I've heard the term "Magna" though.Mike
Yours may have the S&W Magna grips.
The 686 posted has what I would call S&W target grips.
