Possible Reasons For Firearm Purchase Delay?

I bought a couple of guns 20+ years ago and the BGC took maybe 15 minutes. Last month I bought a brand new Ruger Mini 14 online and had it shipped to a local FFL. The BGC took over three hours (didn't use my SSN) but I was able to take it home that day. Two weeks later my husband bought a used Seekins SP15 online and had it shipped to the same FFL. (Wonderful people, they have our business for life.) He used his SSN and the queue was so long he ended up coming home before they got to him. When he called the next day he was told that he was delayed but they'd transfer the firearm in 3 business days. He picked it up and never heard anymore about it, so I guess he eventually passed. But he's really upset that he didn't pass cleanly and we're still trying to figure out why. Did using his social slow it down? Is it because he's lived in six states over 70 years and they tried to contact them all? His brother says he read somewhere that if you buy too many guns close together they automatically delay you, even if, as in this case, it's different people at the same address. Or maybe because it's different people at the same address. It sounds off to me but I wanted to ask if anyone else has heard of this. I'm picking up another gun tomorrow and it's got me worried.
