I've volunteered for the Sheriff's Mounted Posse over in Idaho in the past, but no longer own a horse.

Depends heavily on the mission these days. I'm 50 and in decent health, but the bought with COVID in January still has me with very little physical endurance. Slowly getting into better shape by walking, but it is very slow.

It's good to hear that you are recovering and still willing if not necessarily able.

As a SAR/CERT, former professional Fire and Rescue person, I usually work with Or. National Guard/ Coast Guard, and which ever Sheriff's office calls! I do a lot of volunteer Airborne SAR through out the west coast, and usually work with the Sheriff's offices through out! Have really good working relationships with Marion and Clackamas counties, and those would be the main ones I would normally be working with! I have never been deputized, but usually just show up and ask what they need!

That ended up just about like their foray into Thurston.
And am I the only one seeing a resemblance here?

Good for you! However, it's always a good idea to speak to the sheriff and ask that you be deputized so that you will be covered by Workman's Comp. and have some legal protection against lawsuits from a litigious populace. By the way, I think that you and I have met.

Same here. I'm 60, but a young and pretty feisty 60 if I do say so myself. And with my recent cortisone shot in my knee, I feel like a spring chicken now!
I'll get the permanent fix with my arthroscopic surgery come this winter! :)
My doctor has told me that I can toss that Viagra and get a "Turkey Bone" implant that will make my wife swoon! Gotta run it by my Medicare insurance first.

It's a very distinct aircraft, that's for sure!:) If it was a a cars and planes fly- in, it would have been McNary Salem, or Evergreen 2018! If it was a SAR recently, it would have been the crash and rescue/recovery out of Rome Or. 2018 or the Reno/Stead crash in the Sierra Nevada's 2019, or the epic SAR South west Steam Boat Springs Colorado plane crash in 2015!

Depends.

Sheriff: "You're now deputized. See that gang of people over there?"
Me: "Yeah. The ones with all those AR;s and body armor?"
Sheriff: "Yeap. Go get them!"
Me: "Okies! "Where is everybody else?"
Sheriff: "Oh, they'll be along. Just got to find another to deputize."

Now a serious question. If the sheriff deputized the Portland police department officers, would the officers be beholden to the police chief or the sheriff? A police officer acting as deputy? Arrest procecuted in county judicial system instead of the city?

A man's got to know his limitations, with no training, no law enforcement skills and no military service this middle aged dad bodied hunk of man meat would be a liability on the firing line. Now consider all the wannabes that dont have this wisdom.... Dont get me wrong I do believe we have a duty if called to help, but this strikes me as an odd fantasy exercise.

Lot of good thoughts here!
What if your county Sheriff were overwhelmed, say a natural disaster, and put the call out for ALL able bodied people to help with everything? Would you answer then? That's kind of what's being discussed here, though the current events in Portland have kind of shifted the focus a bit to the "What If it all goes to hell" civil war!

I volunteer with with Yakima County Sheriff's Office SAR as a certified Mountain Rescue Field Team Leader. They've already got my deets, so I'd go in a heartbeat.
Benton County is where I live though, so I'd have to wait for them to ask.

Well we will need ditch diggers.
Got to do something with the body's.

I posed a serious question and you gave your answer as "no." Most police officers are given a blanket authorization to go out of their cities to help the sheriff's deputies or go to other jurisdictions to help there. Prosecution remains in the jurisdiction of where the crime is committed. If they were in the county, the sheriff would be the senior and responsible OIC. Of course we've seen the public response in Seattle, so I should have taken that into account. I'll let you get back to your latte'.
