If your basement has a furnace/mechanical room, the trans was often there.

Is the old fusebox a 4 fuse box, in that case there are only a few original circuits... vintage homes were designed to have one light and one outlet per room. Often the entire lighting/outlet was run on one fuse. Anyway, try killing all the power except the doorbell:
"Cut as many circuits as you can off and walk around the area where you think the transformer is with an AM radio (tuned to a blank channel) and listen for the buzzing to change tones. The transformer has to be powered up though."

I'm betting on either a furnace room or it being covered in the remodel (which is against code and a fire hazard ).

Edit: Sometimes the trans was installed inside a box behind the doorbell.

One time, a women got out of a car that stopped in the middle of the road and approached my car seemingly in distress. Something felt off about it though.
She tried opening my door, before I could even think to unlock it, so I cracked the window and asked what was wrong. She said her boyfriend had beaten her and she needed a ride to the police station.
I offered to pull over and call them for her. She became angry and stormed off. She said something about not needing me to call them for her.
Was it legit? Possibly, but my gut says no and I don't regret my actions.

Usually your gut instinct is right on the first time. You can pick up subtle things that are out of character or out of place, that you aren't consciously aware of, that can alert you to danger. This is helpful in crowds, when you're alone, but especially if someone is asking you to do something for them. Stick with your intuition, it can end up saving your life.

Saw the interview with him this weekend. He said they knew he had a safe with his life savings in it and they beat the crap out of him to get him to open the safe.

Now, how did they know about the safe.

Something about the whole thing, up to and including the messed up interview he gave whilst beaten to a pulp, just seems off to me.

If nothing else, don't talk about your stuff to anyone. You get robbed by friends of friends after your friends shoot their mouths off about your stuff.
The safe info would come from a past relationship. Or family member that probably got into drugs

My sign doesn't seem to work or the people knocking on my door are ignorant of what it means.

Sometimes I'll just holler from the couch that I'm sick. That seems to work well.

Weekend before last I get someone pounding on the door at 10am, not full force but enough to aggravate me - must have bruised his knuckles knocking on doors I guess.

Happened again 15 seconds after the first set. I opened the door and didn't even have to say anything cuz my face was not happy. Church dude just did an about face and walked away.

I'm generally nice to those folk cuz why not but pounding on my door isn't welcome nor warrented.

Anything after dark and I have a gun between where I am and the door and it's in hand when I open t
he door. I've never had to not open the door and call the cops - no one crazy or fishy has knocked. I live in an ok neighborhood, not rich but no meth heads either.
I have no trespassing and another no soliciting . With a 125 dog sleeping on the porch . Have had no knockers unless invited .since

The fact that she got mad at the offer to call tells me you made the right choice.

My wife and I were on a long car trip and decided to pull into a rest stop to get some sleep (late at night) rather than trying to find a motel. We were awakened later by a knock on the drivers side window. We are a little paranoid because we've been rousted out by LEOs for sleeping on the street in Carmel. But I rolled down the window and a young(ish) gal said hi. When she noticed my wife her attitude changed and she said her car wouldn't start and could I walk down (to the far end) and help her out. I offered to call road service for her but she didn't want that. The next morning as we were leaving, we saw her and a pretty big guy in that area.

Come to find out later, that parking with your brake lights on means that you want lot lizard "service". LOL, I had let my leg down and it depressed the brake pedal, long enough to burn out the switch. What can I say, it was a Dodge PU.

Safes only work when you are away. When you are at home, you need a gun. In this scenario I would have yelled through the door that I called the cops, then assumed a defensive position. When I lived out in the boonies, I had security cameras and driveway sensors, so I knew when someone was on my property.

Surprised she didn't just offer you and the wife a 2fer1 !

One day there was a knock on the door at our rural home. I answered, and was solicited by a member of a Christian sect that is known for this. He gave his pitch, and as he was talking I realized that there was a stack of books within reach that I had put there to return to a friend who had loaned them to me. They were the "Chariots of the Gods" series.

As he finished, I picked up the books and said "You know, I was just thinking of this. In this book it proves that Jesus was an alien spaceman who visited Earth. Why don't you take them with you and study them?"

He backed away and we have never been visited again! ;)
Ah - Erich von Daniken - the L. Ron Hubbard of the '70's!

I understand that in this world people are getting harder to trust. I love shooting guns but Feeling like you have to carry at all times even in your home is kind of sad. Setup security lights, get a camera, make it so you can see who is at your door without opening it. Sure, always be ready to get to a gun if needed. I personally live in one of the safest areas there are, I have no concern in opening my door, but I still always check first.

The safest areas are the best targets .They love a unsuspecting trusting good natured victim.

1) I am always armed. Answering the door is no exception. Window next to the door allows me to see who it is.
2) Handguns available in a drawer by the door. Mostly for the Beloved Wife since I have at least one on me.
3) I really hate to be less than well armed, but a .45 with 2 reload mags is just too heavy for the pocket of my bathrobe. (Taking a cue from Hef and his silk PJs I wear a robe and sweats if I don't need to go outside.), so my EDC robe gun is a 5-shot .38.
4) The front door is usually locked and it's about 50m. to the street.
5) Tactical long guns also available for immediate deployment.
6) Is the cat OK? Hurting one of the family fur people would really urinate me off. But then I would have probably dealt with the orcs before it got to that.

Something I heard a while back, but honestly tend to forget about - if someone is at your door, or just outside your house and you want to get them to leave, grab your keys and set off your car alarm. Most baddies don't want attention, start that racket (maybe set off more than one, if you have them) and anyone who is honestly up to no good will probably split for a quieter and easier target. If someone legitimately needs help, they're most likely still going to hang around.

Just something to consider. What I forget to do is to take my keys to bed with me so I have easy access to the remote so I can set it off without going through the house to get the keys.

I mentioned this on here a couple years ago.

Security specialist recommend installing a storm door opposite hinged, that does two things gives you cover while unlocking and makes a door rush or kick in way harder.

It can also make it harder to bring in stuff thru the door but a instant trade off for an easy security change.

NOTE: police hate this as it makes door breach much harder.

Good prep for gun control sweeps that are coming!

Door armor is another good thing to get, and less noticeable!
