Massad Ayoob's Five-Point Checklist

2. Tell responding officers, "I will sign a complaint."
3. Point out pertinent evidence.
4. Point out any witnesses who saw what happened.
5. If there is any hint that you are a suspect, say "Officer, you will have my full cooperation after I have counsel here.

There are three phases to surviving a gunfight...

1) the gunfight itself.
2) the legal fight.
3) the mental & emotional fight.

If you use deadly or potentially deadly force in self-defense you should expect to get arrested, how you handled that is on you. Remain calm, SFTU and let your lawyer do the talking.

hey didnt I post this some years back? :) keep pushing forward its all good stuff..

rule of thumb - anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law, but nothing you say will be used for you in a court of law. keep your mouth shut and get a lawyer....

Ya' know, I think the majority of respondents to this thread REALLY seem to need to source a copy of the book "In The Name Of Self Defense" by Marc MacYoung. Then read it ASAP. The post by kilimanjaro on the last page is more to the point. Hopefully your main focus will be to be seen as the victim by the police, and stay out of jail. Read the book.
Just sayin'.....

While you're at it you might want to look into the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network Inc. Freedom is a wonderful thing. Google ho!

Was the media bias because he was Asian?

Yes, that and the fact that the assailant was a WA national guardsman (Graham Harper).

The racial bias even went as far as the prosecutor trying to blame the student and say he was a "drunken rogue martial arts warrior" because he was Asian and had started a "self defense" interest club as a student. The actual truth is most of his martial arts training was in performance martial arts (Chinese liondance). Anybody who knows martial arts knows there's a huge difference between that vs. practical fighting, but I guess the prosecutor tried to tap into racist stereotypes of Asians.

The innocent student (Jarred Ha) has done an AMA on reddit to talk to people about self-defense and the case. It's long, but you can read it here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/asianameri..._i_am_jarred_ha_exuw_student_who_was_charged/

The name of his defense attorneys were Zachery Wagnild and Michelle Scudder. Sounds like 2 good people to hire in case you're ever involved in a self-defense scenario:

Thanks for the link to the AMA. That was an interesting read.

No offense, but how do you know that the media bias was because he was Asian?

None taken. Media is pretty evident in coverage of the story by multiple sources - here's an example:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...man-punched-face-man-stole-parking-space.html

The whole version of events told in this Daily Mail story definitely take Harper's side and are biased against Ha. Unfortunately for Jarred Ha, any future employer that Googles his name is going to find articles like the Daily Mail one - hopefully the fact that he was proven innocent in a court of law with corroborating testimony by unbiased witnesses will clear his name and get the aforementioned article removed.

One-sided and unfair definitely, but because he was Asian? Please bear in mind that I'm not trying to defend them in any way. I just can't spot the racial bias.

And, SHUT UP until you have legal representation!

I tell my family that every time we watch something like The First 48 or even NCIS, never talk to a police officer without having first spoken to a lawyer! See so many people on First 48 try to be clever to get out of something and end up talking themselves right into a corner and eventually having to confess. Cop yelling at him, throwing out threats about prison times for the crime, ruining your record, all that kind of stuff to scare them into saying what they want to here. Lawyer up first!

On this topic, some good advice can be seen in video form, from two of the nation's top self defense trainers; Massad Ayoob and Rob Pincus. Taking legal advice from non-lawyers online, who likely are passing along myths, can be a very bad and expensive thing to do.

Retired cop. Been there, done that, seen the elephant.

Update on Ha's case:

State must repay ex-UW student found not guilty in stabbing
http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/crime/ha-hearing/

The prosecution, even after Ha was found INNOCENT and justified in armed self-defense, tried to nickel and dime the Ha family for 20% (!) of the $45k the family had to spend to defend their son.

Luckily, the judge sided with the Ha family. State must now reimburse the family for the full amount. Maybe they'll take a chunk of it out of the prosecutor's salary who tried to strong-arm the Ha family with the plea deal in the first place.

I keep ARNOLD LAW FIRM's number with me at all times. (855) 976-8493. They are Gun Rights Attorneys for CC, Open Carry, NFA, Brandishing, Self Defense, Castle Doctrine, Deadly Force etc.
They have offices in Portland and Eugene.

REMEMBER:
1. CALL 911
2. RENDER AID AND ASSISTANCE
3. STFU!
4. TRAIN FOR THAT DAY!

Any idea if we Washington folks could use the Arnold people? It would be nice to have the resource available to us.

the truth is:
1- Most guys in prison put themselves there, they would not stfu.
2- ANYTHING YOU SAY can be misconstrued, taken out of context, and used against you.
3- without your cooperation law enforcement has squat (most of the time)
