"Across the Pond"

As I ponder in the morning dawn
And watch the mist drift across the pond
Ghostly tendrils with the water still
Flowing softly where they will

Spy the early light of day
Touch the tree tops where they play
And chase away the nightly chill
Ever warming where they will

Music fills the mountain air
From song birds singing here and there
Little creatures bringing such a thrill
Scurrying about where they will

I feel a tightness disappear
And a smile form from ear to ear
Gazing across at flowing hill
With freedom to go where I will

"Winters Mountain Top"

Pure white canvas scene
Silence frozen in the air
Like a heart without love
No warmth to be found there
Trees stand tall upon the hill
Limbs weighted down by snow
Longing to be kissed by the sun
So upward they may grow
Winter lingers long and cold
Chilling the spectator to the bone
Instilling urgency to depart
And set the eyes for home

"Mountain Musing"

As far as the eye can wander
All I see
His Splendor and His Majesty
Out yonder past
Hill and pine
Stretching through
Space and time
Sky of blue
Where blue jay flies
Flowing lilies
And butterflies
Rolling creeks
And watersheds
Where cattle low
And lay their heads
The tendril wisp
Of chimney smoke
The hole where squirrels
Hide their poke
All a place
For me to play
On a hazy, lazy
Summer Day!

Sometimes a less than favorable interaction can lead to a creation.

A Stubborn Thorn

A stubborn thorn among the leaves
It pricks and prods as if to tease
Its prickly form a natural shield
Against those who dare to try and wield

A force to reckon with, it stands it's ground
Unyielding to any who would try to hound
A solitary entity, it holds its own
Standing tall among the greenery it's shown

Amidst the branches and the boughs
This stubborn thorn with its prickly vows
Defies the norm of the flora around
And leaves its mark, forever to astound.

"To the Mountain High"

As I rest against the Aspen
Its leaves quake in the early breeze
And full dawn will arrive soon

The Hawken across my knee beckons to the hunt
But, I linger a few more breaths
And gaze out at the splendor of the scenery

High and lonely the Mountain be
While below, man succumbs to the hussle and bussle
Never knowing true freedom

While time passes like the wind 'neath the eagles wing
Swiftly, and then it's gone
Only a memory that it ever was

Soon the snows will come again
Blanketing the gray world with pure white
For a while all will seem clean

It feels I just arrived
Yet age hastens my departure
And I lift myself to my feet

Turning and facing the Moutain high
Its peace has fed my soul
The hunt, is no longer important...

"Dreams on the Mountain,"

I search for dreams
By the dying embers of my fire,
The memories of the long day
Feet constantly upon the trail
Beauty after beauty
Ever passing by
Secret lives hidden in the brush
Where eyes are cautiously watching,
'Til the danger has safely gone
Flowers tilting by the current
From the breath of Mother Nature
The sweet smell tickles my senses
Onward and upward I go
Now stretched out beneath sparkling gems,
Bright orb high above
Smiles down on the man's form
Who slumbers on the Mountain top

"Wandering Thoughts"

Winter has its chill.
Dense fog creeps through the timber.
A few more hours till
The new dawn I will embrace
There are mountains in the way.
However, they are not impediments to adventure.
just obstacles to overcome.
With the wind in my face
spy the shadows in the trees.
Welcome them with open arms.
swaying in the breeze
never meant me any harm.
Tendrils of smoke from my fire
Encourage my thoughts.
To the world that we live in
Where freedom can still be sought
I hauled my pack to the trail.
Onward to the sea
where I'll fade away until
All the mysteries I will remember

There will be no trace of me.
