I would like to put out a plea to raise the bar on the political discussion. First, it would be great if we could all respect each others right to an opinion. The absolutist attitude about our passion only serves to alienate people both looking from outside but also from within.

Also, likely to be unpopular, but could we move beyond the false logic of appealing to probability.

Appealing to Probability is a logical fallacy where one assumes that a thing is inevitable simply because it is possible. Probability can be useful to find out the*likelihood*of future events, probability is not a fallacy in itself. Appeal to Probability is a fallacy because it is used to assume an absolute.

It greatly concerns me that way too often the political alarms go off either way to early or so often to create the general concensus all gun enthusiasts are nut jobs.

Now stepping down from soap box....

The problem with trying to establish a "reasonable" dialog with the present president/cabinet is that to them, giving them everything they want is "reasonable" now and then a few months later they'll want more "reasonable" rules/laws until there's no freedom left except what they want to give you..

Not a problem we aren't supposed to be discussing political crap on here in the first place unless it directly relates to firearms.

Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. - George Washington

One cannot have a reasonable debate with a statist.

Amazing, no expression of political view, leaning, and people can insert assumptions and start attacking. Proves the point. Even though we agree on Guns and gun rights some extremist views can't or won't handle a legitimate, respectful discussion.

Now that's just plain funny, start a thread asking for reasonableness and the forums most unreasonable members are the ones who show up.

I agree with the OP, it can get heated around here rather quickly. This is the internet, however, and the anonymity it affords all but guarantees the rapid escalation we constantly see. If we all sat down together in a room and had a beer, coffee, meal, or whatever, we probably would have a lively, and quite civil discourse.

I doubt it. Certain points of view don't get along, whethere on the internet or in person.

The OP's point is about Absolutism, and it stands. Take a breath, guys.

There's so much good in the worst of us
And so much bad in the best of us,
That it doesn't behoove any of us
To complain about the rest of us.

    ............................................ Piet Hein

Or if you prefer the OP's appeal to logic in general, here's a crash course:
