Really there are only a bit more than few calibers and lots of cartridges . I didn't read the article but the graphs appear to be referring caliber

Not just bullets but bullet :
Design...
Construction...
Along with how that bullet will preform with a particular firearm's barrel length...
Should be considered as well.

Plus no matter what bullet or how its designed or constructed , bullets can do weird things at times when they hit flesh.

On a grim note...dead is dead no matter if one died with a shot from a small , medium or large caliber firearm.

"The Bigger the Bullet, the Bigger the Hole." 45ACP baby!

.452 minus .355 is less 0.097 inches

Not a whole lot of difference.

Now mass of the projectile; assuming 230 grains vs 115 grains - the mass of standard .45 ACP (assuming .45 ACP and not .45 LC) projectile is double that of the very common 115 grain 9mm.

My personal theory is that penetration matters and that in a significant number of cases the more mass the projectile has, the more likely it is to penetrate to vital organs and/or expand and/or cause enough bleeding to eventually be fatal.

But as Andy point out, there are a lot more variables than just the diameter of the projectile.

I think you'll find that my comment was in the nature of being a tongue-in-cheek observation that is oft-made by the less well-informed, rather than a serious attempt to determine why one bullet might be thought to be more lethal than another.

Now hold on, there, but I always thought that the penetration depended on how hard you pulled that trigger!

I got the humor here...and if one will pardon a slight thread drift...

Once while shooting some clay birds with a borrowed shotgun...
If how hard you pulled the trigger determined just how hard the projectile hit the target...
Then that clay bird I was "shooting" at would have totally disappeared...
And my shot would indeed have been : "The one heard around the world"....

I was not aware that his shotgun had a "automatic" safety....:D

Can one of you guys who's been reloading longer then my 50 years explain to me how a .38 is a medium sized caliber and a .357 is a large sized caliber.

Should I go separate my dozens of boxes of slugs which for decades I have been using in both my .38 Spl and .357 Mag loads?

Always trying to learn. To bad the teachers in this study are MORONS
