No, that amendment protects lobbyists. It says nothing about paying them.

Everybody has a right to say what they want (with a few exceptions), nobody has a right to get paid to say it.
There is no distinction between someone's opinion they hold and the opinion they're paid to state. There is no more a motive test for 1st amendment than there is for the 2nd amendment.

Their right to say what they want other than lying about the content of the bill for which they're collecting.
 
Absolutely, you can spend your money on saying what you want all you want. It doesn't protect your right to get paid to say it. Outflow of money is protected, inflow is not. If you can find a court case that contradicts that, I'd love to see it.
How about a court case that backs you up? Show one case that prohibits paid ballot signature collection? If it were illegal then people would catch them all the time because this has been standard in all the states I know.

Anyway you're missing the point. The point isn't that someone is spending money or making money. The point is that if the measure is on the ballot, it's going to win absolutely. In Oregon we lost the war years ago. This is just the detail. The only hope we have is the courts not the ballot box.
