It would seem that since the data comes from the FBI background checks, that most of these would be new guns. Certainly many used guns go through dealers and therefore show up as part of this statistic, but I think the vast majority would be new. Also, the many guns traded privately do not add to the number of guns existing.

Sometime just for fun, Google the stats on private gun ownership in the US against all of the guns owned by the military and law enforcement combined. The government can never take our guns away. They're vastly outnumbered and aren't armed well enough. Besides, I would guess that most of the military and LE guys would end up on our side of any governmental gun confiscation issue.

Is that why the Japanese still won't attack the mainland?

Interesting analysis:

Number of cars in the US - Roughly 300,000,000
Number of guns in the US - Roughly 3000,000,000

Primary use of cars - transportation
Primary use of guns - killing (argument made by anti-gun idiots)

Number of car-related deaths per year - 40,000
Number of gun-related deaths per year - 30,000

So, it's safe to say that when something has a primary use unrelated to killing and actually kills more people than something "designed" for killing, it's not a matter of having enough regulation. Guns don't need anymore regulation.
