If your really talking safety. Its a poor idea to be shooting into a gravel pit ( the idea being you shouldnot be shooting at rock) I try and go up to dead end roads where we can find an earth backstop. We can almost always find longer range than a pit....we clean up after ourselves and hardly ever have any one joining us.

by definition is rock not earth so you shoot into rock (AKA gravel) as well. Albeit possibly a finer gravel by quite possibly larger? !
