A combination of an OSP officer who should never have been an OSP officer, the general trend in LEO training/attitude towards seeing someone who simply has a gun, and the tendency of LEOs to do mag dumps once one of them starts shooting.

Result - homeowner dead, OSP only takes blame after being sued.

So, being wrongfully killed by police will ONLY get your spouse 1.6 million 8 years later huh? 200k a year. That's pathetic. It should have been a 20 or 30 million dollar suit. The wife should have taken it to trial and absolutely raped OSP for this behavior. Hiding records too that the OSP officer was a POS…this sort of behavior makes people not trust cops

Remember, "Oregon State Police" doesn't pay a penny, Oregonians do. What should be part of the lawsuit is tracking down the supervisors and management that failed to take appropriate action.

Instead of tax payer money funded payments all restitution payments should come out of the collective pensions of that county with a limited cap on what tax payers are obligated to pay in thus capping this never ending revenue stream and forcing bad cops to get corralled better by their good cop counterparts as BOTH parties suffer at the hands of the bad cops. I feel like if their own money was on the line: bad shots and poor procedure execution would be heavily scrutinized and better regulated. When John Q. Public foots the bill, resources for restitutions are a bottomless register than can be robbed any time counties and states need to pay out.

I like that. Make it so that OSP or State have to pay it out of the PERS/pensions for unions funding and it'll put a quick stop to this

Reading the account of the event from the article, guy got shot while seemingly attempting to disarm himself before approaching police.

Regardless of fault, takeaway seems to be, don't touch the gun, even to disarm yourself, let them do that, or, better yet, walk back into your house and don't talk to them.

Sadly they drag these things out for just that reason. So few will hang in. If she had gone to trial she could have hit them HARD but, then the state would have tied it up in court till she was dead. As another poster mentioned the loser here is those who pay taxes. The people who made the poor choices? They pay nothing and feel no pain. 🤬

Seriously. This is part of Self Defense 101. Massad Ayoob himself has said this numerous times.

There's a reason why they called this "justified" and the Trooper's past judgements do not apply in this case. Don't be a dumbass and reach for a gun in front of a cop. Don't beat your wife either, for that matter.
