Those liars have sent the local media talking points that cleverly focus on improved "background checks," with little mention of magazine bans or permits. The headline readers driving to work hear this and assume it's no big deal. Just "common sense".
We can send talking points too. Has anyone here reached out to the political party offices in your county or NRA ILA? They might have advice on how to set up an organization. Any one here Retired and looking for something to do? Am betting it will be easier to get some financial backing from employed gun owners who have money and little time.

I reached out to NRA ILA. Asked if there is someone who can offer advice on how locals can fight these things. They gave me a number 800 392-8683. Several of us should call during work hours when someone will be there. Perhaps they will interpret multiple inquiries as a reason to care and help

If everyone here reaches out they will take more interest in Oregon. Also the other gun rights groups. A few letter writers won't do any. An organized effort might. With enough people…

Has anyone else reached out to local political people for advice and help on how to run a campaign?
Has anyone else reached out to local gun stores? They will be helpful in distributing our literature. These silly rules will hurt their top and bottom lines.
You don't have to post other peoples' names or details. Just let us hear your progress towards organizing opposition.
How many are retired? You have time to donate.
How many are employed? You have money and limited time to donate.
We can't just expect someone to hire a lawyer to fight this after it becomes law. Even there, will you be helping with those legal fees?
We talk to each other. But we are already convinced. How about everyone who doesn't know or care one way or the other? Talk to them. And help a campaign.

Those gun groups need donations and INVOLVEMENT by the donors. Will they get them?
Everyone on this thread, can you please post what YOU personally are willing to do to push back on this silly law? Choices will be things like:
  1. Start an organization for the purpose of pushing NO on 114
  2. Link up and volunteer time and money to existing organizations to get them interested in opposing 114 on our behalf
    • That begs the question: How many of you have already reached out to existing orgs?
  3. Flood TV stations and newspapers with letters and requests for meetings with reporters
  4. Distribute literature
  5. Write that literature
  6. Something else (tell us your idea)
  7. Nothing at all
One or two people aren't going to cut it. Enough people might.

What's your response? Please post here.

There is so much wrong with BM114 that it is hard to condense it into one page. Here is my attempt:

If you do not own a firearm or all of the firearms that you would like to purchase, then you better go out and buy them before the rush in October!

This unconstitutional mess of a Ballot Measure contains an unfunded mandate that will shut down all firearm transfers in 2023 for weeks, or possibly months!

Shut it down for everyone except cops, their families and the politicians who hold the cops purse strings.

Right now every firearm transfer except for immediate family in state requires a full Federal Background Check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) conducted by the Oregon State Police. Under our under current laws the OSP can delay you for months or even years if they see something that they don't like for example if you got divorced or sued out of state and they want a final disposition which may no longer exist in the records.

After BM114 you will have to take a police approved safety course with live fire practice before they will issue you a five year permit to purchase. Sounds great you say, however there is no funding in this bill for the over burdened police departments and not enough live fire ranges for the public. Furthermore you will be required to "demonstrate safe gun handling" to your local police officer, who has better things to do, to get your initial purchase permit and every five years to renew it. If you do not have a firearm, the police are not obligated to let you use one of theirs and because of Oregon's already strict Background Check law only an in state family member can lend you one. This is a real live Catch 22 for a potential new firearms owner. After all that you still need to pass a full Federal Background Check through NICS signed off by the OSP before purchasing your firearm.

Criminals, of course, will continue to buy, borrow or steal their firearms without any pesky Background Checks. And Soros funded DAs will let them walk with no charges.

Oregon Ballot Measures are only suppose to contain a single subject, however, this BM has a second which bans the sale of firearm magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds, even though cops have 17-20 rounds of ammo in their sidearms and more for their rifles. Oh you can keep the standard capacity magazines that came with your firearm; you just cannot leave the house with them. Even your Grandpa's old shotgun would be subject to this law if you could load it with more than ten 1½ inch long mini-shells. How is all this two subjects? To use a car example, it would be saying that all drivers are required to take a DMV approved course and pass a test every five years before being issued a permit to purchase a vehicle, ALSO all vehicles with an engine size of more than 2.0 liters are banned from sale or use in public. Oh you can still drive it around your property. Don't have acreage property? Too bad for you, take the bus.

Criminals, of course, will continue to shoot at each other with 30+ round magazines.

Know your Rights before voting them away.

Corrections and criticisms are welcome.

Good post! Just thinking out loud, if this were a campaign or a company we would probably make work groups. For example one might make a strategy and planning workgroup to deal with the big picture.

Such a strategy workgroup might for example propose three methods of attacking this unconstitutional proposed legislation:

(1) get it off the ballot via legal challenge or gathering evidence that they didn't follow the petition rules and submitting to appropriate agency. For example on one of the threads someone posted a photo that seems to break a rule pertaining to one issue only.

(2) gain enough votes against that it doesn't pass. Many of the comments above pertain to this. One comment I have is that Emotional appeals are much more effective than logical appeals. Fe this is a likely scenario we will see if this passes, "Candice was attacked by a stalker and thought about getting a gun but couldn't due to classes, permits etc not set up yet". "She new crime was rising but she felt intimidated going to a class where they had live fire training because she had no gun and was worried about possibly being the only person of color there". "She wasn't able to buy a gun before the class". You get the jist, an average person can empathize with the need to protect oneself and can imagine themselves being in their shoes.

A second comment is that social media posts/events/videos/comments/articles traveling far and wide is free. Especially if it connects to that emotional appeal it may reach a lot of poeple.

3) legal challenge should it pass. less urgent of course but part of a prossible three pronged strategy.

Then one could set up workgroups for each of the three. Just an example.

Oh you can keep the standard capacity magazines that came with your firearm; you just cannot leave the house with them.
Actually Nick, you can leave the house with them to use at a range. But not for something as concealed carry. I'd have to downgrade my Glock from a 12 round mag to 10.

(C) While engaging in the legal use of the large-capacity magazine, at a public or private shooting range or shooting gallery or for recreational activities such as hunting, to the extent permitted under state law; or (D) While participating in firearms competition or exhibition, display or educational project about firearms sponsored, conducted by, approved or under the auspices of a law enforcement agency or a national or state-recognized entity that fosters proficiency in firearms use or promotes firearms education; and (E) While transporting any large-capacity magazines in a vehicle to one of the locations authorized in paragraphs (c)(A) to (D) of this subsection, the large-capacity magazine is not inserted into the firearm and is locked in a separate container.

LEVO fully knows the additional red tape this measure throws on gun ownership will make it difficult and time consuming enough that it will discourage sales and also force out many smaller FFL sellers. And don't forget about the even worse IP 18 that will be sent through the legislature.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they started going after where you can shoot in addition to what you can shoot. As in the name of "gun safety" no more of that dangerous recreational shooting on National Forest, BLM or private property. Sanctioned ranges only. UK style gun control.

Going with the permit required to buy,

You need to be aware of the recent SCOTUS ruling:

What's to say Oregon doesn't adopt a similar approach to exercising your constitutional right for acquiring a gun?. Remember this has no system in place yet nor funding and utlimately you do have to wait upon approval from the state.

Don't get tricked

Excellent post. And the link too.

I respectfully mention that the law will allow you to have the >10 round mags, but locked away from your gun until you get to where you are going with them. This is even true for a CCP holder.

Great part: "Criminals, of course, will continue to buy, borrow or steal their firearms without any pesky Background Checks. And Soros funded DAs will let them walk with no charges"

Your post and the linked site are excellent. Now we need to get links to them on Facebook and other means.

Are we now to the point of making a separate thread for BM 114? This one started in November last year and it takes awhile to get to the current information. I believe that becoming effective also means that information is easy to obtain. Making a sticky with the current organizations, what actions are being taken, and how to work with them would be helpful.

ETA: The website for Stop114.com doesn't offer anything we can do about it except get mad and send them money. Frankly, it sounds a lot like NRA at this time.

My suggestion as well, first make sure that every member on this forum, especially Oregonians, are completely aware of this ballot measure.

Many people who may have initially followed this thread might not even have a clue that IP 17 is now actually going to be on the ballot.

It would be awesome if there were some sort of mass messaging option to spread the word to everyone's inbox directly!

As I linked in the other thread Lars Larson will be discussing it on his show. His Twitter has 34k active followers.

Getting the word out really needs to be top priority as we only have until Nov 8th to try and stop this thru voting. Failing that it's hopes prayers and cracking out your wallets for litigation from FPC/GOA/SAF etc.

A simple sticky locked info thread that could be placed somewhere easily seen on this site would certainly help and maybe something in the classifieds section since that likely gets way more traffic than the forums do.

Let new members who make their intro threads (for Oregon) know to vote against this measure. Tell your friends family and coworkers. There is literally 0 reason not to be informing people about this violation to our rights.

In the first debate between all OR gov candidates Johnson and Drazan opposed IP17 (Measure 114). 17-18 are meant to go hand in hand so even if we stop 114 there's still the upcoming assault weapons ban they have planned for the 2023 legislation session.

VOTE NO ON MEASURE 114!!!!

Looks like OFF is behind the website:
We have created a PAC specifically to fight this extreme and dangerous measure. Please visit and share the Stop 114 website for details on the measure and a downloadable fact sheet you can share with you family, friends, and local gun dealers. https://stop114.com/
